A documentary on the Tupac murder trial is on the way, and it will follow Duane “Keffe D” Davis all the way through his sentencing while giving viewers never before seen footage and photos from Tupac’s family.
The untitled feature is directed by Marian Mohamed, a BAFTA winner and Emmy nominee, and will premiere on Sky Documentaries and the streaming service NOW in 2027. Passion Pictures, Propagate Content and West Buttermilk are producing. No U.S. distributor has been announced.
The film crew was right there with the Shakur family as the case played out in Las Vegas. Tupac’s brother Mopreme Shakur takes part in the film, along with members of Tupac’s inner circle, and the family and people close to him handed over personal footage and photographs the public has never seen. The documentary opens on the first day of evidence and runs through the verdict and Davis’s sentencing, which is set for October 13.
Mohamed said she wants the film to give a voice to a family that is not just grieving but has taken back control of how Tupac’s murder is viewed. She also said she wants people to laugh, cry and argue while watching, and to connect with who Tupac was, not just how he died.
Tupac was shot near the Las Vegas Strip on September 7, 1996, and died six days later at 25. His killing went unsolved for decades until Davis, a former Compton gang leader, was arrested in 2023. In late August, a jury needed less than three hours to convict him of first-degree murder for his role in the shooting.
Tupac’s sister Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur and Mopreme were in the courtroom every day of the trial, and the family was emotional when the verdict was read. Davis has shown no remorse. Asked by The Hollywood Reporter whether he had a message for Tupac’s family, he said, “I ain’t got nothing to say to them.” He has said he plans to appeal.
The Sky film is separate from another Tupac murder trial documentary that filmmaker RJ Bond was working on with Davis’s defense team before the trial began. This one tells the story from the family’s side of the courtroom.
