Tyra Banks Breaks Her Silence on "ANTM" Controversies and Says She Went Too Far [Video]

Tyra Banks

Tyra Banks is finally pulling the curtain back on one of reality TV’s most talked-about franchises, and she is not pretending it was perfect. Now 52, the supermodel and creator of “America’s Next Top Model” appears in Netflix’s upcoming three-part docuseries, “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model,” which revisits the long-running competition and the conversations it sparked over more than two decades. The show originally aired for 24 cycles between 2003 and 2018 and helped shape modern reality television, for better and for worse.

In the trailer, Banks directly addresses the intensity of the series and her own role in pushing boundaries.

“I knew I went too far. It was very, very intense, but you guys were demanding it, so we kept pushing it, more and more and more,” she says, as clips of the show’s most controversial moments flash across the screen.

Produced by EverWonder Studio and Wise Child Studios and directed by Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan, the documentary features rare access to former contestants, judges, and producers. Familiar faces, including Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, Jay Manuel, and Miss J, reflect on their experiences, while former contestants share how the show impacted their lives long after the cameras stopped rolling.

Over the years, “America’s Next Top Model” has faced heavy criticism for body shaming, promoting unhealthy standards, and a widely condemned challenge involving blackface. Banks has acknowledged that many of those choices look very different when viewed through today’s cultural lens.

Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model” premieres February 16 on Netflix.
