Tyrese Gibson got people talking after an appearance on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, where he said he married his first wife, Norma, so she could stay in the country.
He explained that she is from London and that they had a baby on the way. Tyrese said he did what he felt he had to do so he would not have to keep traveling to London to spend time with his child. In his words, he did not marry her because the two were happily married. The clip was passed around on social media and drew plenty of backlash.
Some critics pointed out that entering a marriage to get around immigration rules can be a federal offense. No charges or investigation have been reported in connection with his comments, and a response from Norma was not part of the early coverage.
The comments come at a tense time for the exes, who have been in a very public custody dispute over their daughter this year. Tyrese has not been shy about airing his side of things, and this latest remark added fuel to the conversation.
