The U.S. has been taking a serious stance on cutting down the amount of nicotine Americans consume, in particular by raising the legal age of purchasing tobacco to 21.

U-Haul has taken heed to this and implemented a nicotine ban on new employees.

The moving truck rental company announced that as of February 1st, in 21 states where the company operates, it will no longer hire nicotine users. However, employees who were hired before that date will not be affected by this new policy.

Jessica Lopez, U-Haul chief of staff, said in a news release, “We are deeply invested in the well-being of our Team Members.”

“Nicotine products are addictive and pose a variety of serious health risks. This policy is a responsible step in fostering a culture of wellness at U-Haul, with the goal of helping our Team Members on their health journey,” She added, according to CNN.

“Individuals seeking U-Haul jobs in the aforementioned 21 states will see statements regarding the nicotine-free hiring policy on applications, and will be questioned about nicotine use,” the company said in a statement.
