Latto is clearing the air after fans thought Big Mama was her final bow. In a new Apple Music conversation with Nadeska Alexis, the Atlanta rapper opened up about motherhood, postpartum emotions, her new album, and the retirement claim that had the internet side-eyeing the timeline. Apple Music promoted the interview as a discussion about Big Mama, motherhood, and rumors that Latto was leaving music. The retirement chatter started after Latto posted on X that Big Mama would be her “retirement album,” writing, “5/29 My retirement album Thank you for everything,” according to Complex and Billboard. However, she now says that moment came from a much heavier place.

“Remember when we was talking about postpartum depression, the good days and bad days?” Latto said. “That was definitely not one of the good days. Especially experiencing postpartum for the first time. You don’t know what to expect. I kind of underestimated it.”
She continued, “Yeah, that was just one of those days where I was at home and overwhelmed with the album. I was overwhelmed. I’m experiencing motherhood for the first time. I’m dropping my album. My last album, at that, that I owed the label. So it’s just, like… I was going through it that day. Today’s a good day. I wouldn’t say I’m retiring today… Talk to me next week again, I might say, ‘Nah, that s**t was for real.’ So, I don’t know. I’m going through it. Listen, I crashed. It is what it is. I’m not trying to be perfect anymore. I’m not trying to uphold this… I crashed. It is what it is. I’ma try not to take it to Twitter next time. laughs”
The context matters. Latto confirmed the birth of her first child in May through an Instagram video, with Billboard and People reporting that the baby’s father is 21 Savage. She first revealed her pregnancy in March through the Big Mama rollout and “Business & Personal” visuals.
Postpartum depression can include sadness, anxiety, mood swings, and difficulty coping after childbirth, according to the National Institute of Mental Health and Cleveland Clinic. So for now, Latto’s message is less “I’m done” and more “I’m human.” And honestly, that might be the realest Big Mama era headline yet.
