Cardi B is making one thing painfully clear to her own fanbase: every release is not getting the blockbuster treatment. During a spicy X Spaces conversation, the Bronx rapper pushed back against fans demanding Cardi B visuals that resemble the elaborate productions attached to some of her biggest records, including “WAP” and “Money.” According to Cardi, the constant criticism is not inspiring her to step things up. It is making her want to do less.

“When y’all complain, y’all don’t make me want to sit down and be like, ‘You know what? Well, maybe I need to start doing this, maybe I need to start doing this, maybe I should need to start doing this and more and more of that,’” Cardi said. “No, it made me want to say, ‘B***h, shut the f**k up, suck my d**k, and I ain’t doing s**t now. How about that?’ That’s the type of person I am.”That frustration appears tied to expectations created by Cardi’s own catalog. “WAP,” her 2020 collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion, arrived with a Colin Tilley-directed video packed with elaborate sets and celebrity cameos. The song recently earned Diamond certification after surpassing 10 million certified units in the United States. Her 2018 single “Money” also received a glossy, high-fashion visual that became part of Cardi’s reputation for turning music videos into events.
But Cardi says that standard was never supposed to become the requirement for everything she releases.
“I know sometimes y’all want to compete…I wanna be top 10. I wanna do this. I know sometimes y’all want music videos like ‘WAP,’ ‘Money,’ but it’s not gonna be like that all the time,” she explained. “Not everything is the same aesthetic.”
The timing matters. Cardi released her long-awaited sophomore album “AM I THE DRAMA?” in September 2025, seven years after “Invasion of Privacy.” The 23-track project included “WAP,” “Up,” “Outside” and newer material while officially ending one of rap’s longest waits for a superstar sophomore album.
Now, Cardi says she deliberately planned to spend this summer living instead of locking herself into another nonstop recording cycle.
“Y’all know I have not been in the studio. Y’all know I have not been doing all of that s**t right now because like I said, I was gonna take off this summer,” she said. “I told myself this summer I’m gonna take off. I’m gonna live my best life. I worked my a** off in the beginning of the year. I went through a breakup. This summer, I’m like I’m all the way outside.”
She also said she has been putting more attention into her businesses. Still, being outside apparently sparked another idea: feed fans music without turning every song into a full-scale rollout.
“Some records are are gonna be planned out to the T. Some records are gonna come with a music video or the playlist and all the bulls**t, all the bells and whistles, and some s**t I just wanna put out just for the f**k of it because I wanna build my catalog,” Cardi said. “I want to build my catalog. I don’t wanna constantly feel like I’m pressured to do s**t.”
That distinction is the real fight here. Cardi is not saying she wants to stop releasing music. She is saying she wants the freedom to release some records simply because she likes them, without every drop becoming a referendum on budgets, charts, playlists, videos and what another fanbase is doing.
And she believes the strategy is already working.
“Back in the algorithm for music. I’ve been in the fucking algorithm for f**king, mess, bulls**t, and I’m back in the algorithm for my s**t, for my music, and it’s everybody,” she said. “I can’t even f**king stop scrolling without hearing my s**t.”
Cardi also revealed that she has more studio work approaching, saying she planned to spend two weeks recording in Miami. However, she warned that fan pressure can drain the motivation behind those plans.
“Do you think I wanna go to record in Miami for two weeks for y’all? No, it don’t make me wanna do that. It don’t motivate me. It just made me wanna be like, ‘Man, f**k y’all.’ I’m getting money right now. I don’t need to do music right now.”
For Cardi, the goal appears simpler than the expectations surrounding her: she wants new records in rotation.
“It’s about dropping music. I’m a f**king artist. I’m an artist and I wanna keep dropping,” she said. “I wanna go to the club and I wanna hear my s**t over and over and over again.”
In other words, Bardi Gang might still get the cinematic Cardi. They just should not expect her to bring a blockbuster budget, perfectly coordinated rollout and “WAP”-sized spectacle every time she decides to feed the streets.
