What Led to “Dear JT”? The Failed "RAW" Album, Jealousy Accusations, and Nasty Online War That Ended the City Girls

The City Girls were once one of hip-hop’s hottest female rap groups, but behind the scenes, Yung Miami and JT were growing apart long before their friendship publicly exploded on Twitter. What started with a disappointing album rollout eventually turned into accusations of jealousy, sneak dissing, betrayal, and a broken sisterhood that neither rapper has fully repaired.

By the time Yung Miami released her emotional song “Dear JT” in October 2026, the former best friends had reportedly gone nearly two years without speaking. However, the warning signs were already there in 2023, when the duo struggled to recreate the success that made them household names.

October 20, 2023: The City Girls released their third studio album, “RAW,” short for “Real [Expletive] Whores,” featuring appearances from Usher, Lil Durk, Muni Long, Juicy J, and Kim Petras.

Despite their popularity and previous hits like “Act Up” and “Twerk,” the project failed to deliver the commercial success many expected. It debuted at No. 117 on the Billboard 200 with approximately 10,000 first-week album-equivalent units.

The numbers sparked criticism online, with some questioning whether the duo’s popularity had peaked. During an October 27 appearance on “The Breakfast Club,” JT acknowledged that the group had not done enough to promote the project, suggesting that their rollout contributed to its disappointing reception.

At the time, fans largely viewed the situation as a commercial setback. However, Miami would later reveal that the album’s struggles reflected bigger problems between the two artists.

February 2, 2024: JT continued establishing herself as a solo rapper with the release of “Sideways,” following her July 2023 single “No Bars.”

The records highlighted JT’s individual sound and confidence outside the group. However, they eventually became central to the feud after Miami accused her former partner of using both tracks to take subliminal shots at her.

Meanwhile, Miami was also working independently, developing her media career through “Caresha Please” and releasing her own music.

Although neither woman had officially announced the end of the City Girls, their increasingly separate careers fueled speculation that the group was falling apart.

April 8, 2024: Everything spilled onto X, formerly Twitter, when Miami and JT engaged in a heated public argument that exposed serious problems within their friendship.

Miami accused JT of secretly targeting her for weeks, writing, “A [expletive] been sneak dissing me for weeks,” while questioning why her longtime friend appeared upset with her.

JT fired back with cryptic messages, including a warning that things done privately eventually come to light.

The disagreement quickly became more personal when Miami directly accused JT of making two songs about her. She identified “No Bars” and “Sideways” as the alleged diss records, claiming she had continued supporting JT despite believing the lyrics were directed at her.

Miami also rejected suggestions that she was jealous of JT’s solo success. Instead, she maintained that she had consistently encouraged her former partner’s career and believed JT had developed resentment toward her.

JT denied writing the songs about Miami and questioned why she had never approached her privately if she believed they contained disrespectful lyrics.

However, JT had accusations of her own.

She claimed Miami failed to defend her when people criticized her online and suggested Miami became bothered whenever JT received positive attention. JT also accused her former friend of not acknowledging the support she had provided throughout their relationship.

The argument became particularly heated when Miami suggested JT was kicking her while she was already dealing with personal controversy.

JT countered by questioning Miami’s account of who had supported her during the difficult period.

Even Miami’s close friend Saucy Santana became part of the dispute. JT proposed discussing their issues on “Caresha Please” but specifically requested that Santana not participate in the conversation.

The public exchange gave fans an unusually detailed look at their fractured relationship, with both women accusing the other of failing to show genuine friendship.

Later on April 8, 2024: After hours of arguing online, the two apparently spoke privately by phone.

Miami subsequently expressed confusion when another message from JT appeared after their conversation. JT explained that the post had been written before their phone call.

The argument ended with the two exchanging messages of love, briefly giving fans hope that they had worked through their differences.

However, their apparent reconciliation did not lead to a return to making music together.

June 3, 2024: Miami finally explained why the City Girls stopped working as a duo during an interview with Complex.

She acknowledged that the disappointing performance of “RAW” contributed to the decision, but said the real problem was that she and JT had reached different stages in their lives.

Miami explained that both women appeared to thrive independently, but whenever they attempted to collaborate, the chemistry no longer felt the same.

Her comments confirmed what many fans had suspected for months: the City Girls were no longer functioning as a group.

July 19, 2024: JT officially released her debut solo mixtape, “City Cinderella,” featuring 16 tracks.

The project debuted at No. 27 on the Billboard 200, outperforming the chart debut of “RAW” and strengthening JT’s position as an independent artist.

Her solo momentum further demonstrated that the two women were pursuing separate professional paths.

August 8, 2024: Miami offered an even more revealing explanation during the season two premiere of “Caresha Please,” where Saucy Santana interviewed her about the group’s breakup.

“We outgrew each other,” Miami admitted.

She explained that their differences extended beyond music. Their personal styles, creative visions, and daily routines had become increasingly disconnected.

According to Miami, they sometimes traveled separately, used different glam teams, and had separate dressing rooms while touring.

She revealed that performing together onstage was occasionally the only meaningful interaction they had during those trips.

Her comments suggested the group’s public chemistry had been masking a growing emotional and professional distance.

August 2024: JT also discussed the breakup during a separate Complex interview, presenting their decision to pursue solo careers as mutual.

She maintained that separating professionally made sense for both artists and insisted there were no hard feelings surrounding the decision.

JT also made it clear that she would always embrace her City Girls legacy, regardless of whether the group eventually reunited.

While their explanations differed in tone, both women agreed that continuing as a duo no longer worked.

March 11, 2026: Miami reflected on the group’s influence after fans began revisiting their biggest records.

Responding to the renewed praise, she suggested people sometimes wait until something has ended before fully appreciating it. Her comments indicated that she still recognized the importance of the City Girls era, even while building her solo career.

May 2026: During an appearance on “Keep It Positive, Sweetie,” Miami compared leaving the City Girls to ending a romantic relationship.

She described feeling happier and more focused on herself after becoming independent. Her comments suggested that the separation had allowed her to prioritize her own growth following years of navigating a group dynamic.

October 2026: While promoting her debut solo album, Miami revealed that she and JT had not spoken in approximately two years.

During a Pandora Playback interview with FlyGuyDC, she recalled their last conversation taking place around JT’s birthday roughly two years earlier.

Despite the lengthy silence, Miami did not completely dismiss the possibility of a future reunion. When asked whether the City Girls could eventually record together again, she responded, “Inshallah,” meaning God willing.

October 23, 2026: The breakup came full circle when Miami released her debut solo album, “Watch Dis!,” which included the deeply personal track “Dear JT.”

Rather than celebrating their separation, Miami used the song to revisit their friendship, the opportunities they shared, and the pain of watching their relationship deteriorate publicly.

“Fallin’ out with my sister in public, so embarrassing,” she raps.

Miami also suggests that she previously overlooked wrongdoing to preserve their bond and expresses regret over the history they could have continued making together.

During an interview surrounding the album’s release, Miami confirmed that she had not played the song for JT beforehand. She also revealed that recording it brought her to tears.

The track marked a significant emotional shift from the heated accusations both women exchanged in 2024.

Although Miami and JT have both found opportunities outside the group, the absence of a lasting reconciliation continues to hang over their shared legacy.
