The Whitney Houston Barbie has officially arrived, giving fans a new way to celebrate one of the most recognizable voices and images in music history. According to Mattel, the Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll recreates Houston’s unforgettable appearance in the music video for “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me),” complete with her lilac dress, colorful earrings, pumps and voluminous 1980s curls. Mattel lists the collector doll at $60.

The release on August 9 carried an even deeper meaning because the date would have marked Houston’s 63rd birthday. Mattel developed the doll in collaboration with Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister in law and executor of The Estate of Whitney E. Houston.
Mattel said the Whitney Houston Barbie celebrates her “record-breaking career, legacy and timeless music that inspired generations of artists and continues to resonate with fans around the world,” according to the statement. The doll also comes with a microphone and microphone stand, positioning Barbie as if she is stepping into one of Houston’s signature performances.
For Pat Houston, however, this collaboration represents far more than another celebrity collectible. She told PEOPLE that the idea can be traced back roughly two decades.
“Whitney had never really endorsed anything, and we started having conversations about her brand … we talked about a Mattel doll 20 years ago,” Pat said.
Whitney was originally interested in developing a doll connected to her 1992 film “The Bodyguard” and its blockbuster soundtrack. Pat recalled that Whitney “really wanted to invest the time in doing a doll.” Although that version never materialized during the singer’s lifetime, Pat said finally seeing the idea become reality carries emotional weight.
“To see that vision finally come to life decades later is both emotional and inspiring,” Pat told PEOPLE.
“I’m just really happy that we’re seeing this doll come to fruition, and it’s going to be a lasting influence across generations,” she continued. “I’m just honored to be in this place at this time, and we’re actually doing it.”
The connection to “The Bodyguard” adds another layer to the story. The project Whitney once considered would have been tied to one of the defining chapters of her career. “The Bodyguard” soundtrack has reached 18 times multi-Platinum certification in the United States, making it the highest certified soundtrack in RIAA history.
Instead of looking to “The Bodyguard” for the finished doll, Mattel went back five years earlier to 1987 and the euphoric visual era surrounding “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” The choice places the focus on Whitney at the height of her colorful pop stardom. According to Billboard, the song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained there for two weeks in 1987. Houston’s official site notes that the track was the first of four consecutive No. 1 singles from her second album, Whitney, while the song also earned her the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female.
Pat described choosing that moment as a “no-brainer” while speaking with PEOPLE. She also made clear that Mattel treated the details of the Whitney Houston Barbie with care.
“I witnessed the care, I witnessed the creativity, and the commitment behind celebrating Whitney’s legacy,” she said. “It just made a very, very meaningful experience. I’m just very grateful to have been a part of a project that honors her artistry, her elegance, and her impact that she still has on the world.”
That process extended, Pat said, “down to the earrings, to the color of the hair, to the color of the dress, to the details on the shoes.”
Mattel’s official product description supports that attention to the original visual. The company describes the doll as wearing a body hugging lilac tank dress with bright earrings and pumps, along with Houston’s dramatic curls from the period. The company specifically identifies the “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” video as the inspiration.
“It was incredible to be a part of all that, even to walk through their showroom,” Pat told PEOPLE. “Everyone was so involved in every aspect of creating such an amazing doll … they’re just very particular in how they do things, and they want to make the moment special, and they did that for this particular project.”
The doll is also arriving during an unusually active period for the late superstar’s catalog and legacy. Just two days before the doll’s birthday release, Houston’s estate released “WH1TNEY,” a collection bringing together all 11 of her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles. Houston’s official website announced the August 7 release, with the album and Barbie being both part of the birthday celebrations surrounding her legacy.
The Barbie also follows major institutional recognition for Houston in 2026. Houston was among the artists selected for its 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award, alongside Chaka Khan, Cher, Carlos Santana, Fela Kuti and Paul Simon. The Recording Academy’s records show that Houston earned six Grammy wins from 25 nominations during her recording career.
Her home state also celebrated her influence. The New Jersey Hall of Fame held a Whitney Houston Capstone Event at American Dream in February 2026, honoring the New Jersey native and Hall of Fame inductee. The event followed the formal 40th anniversary period established by Houston’s estate, which ran from February 14, 2025 through February 14, 2026 and commemorated four decades since the release of her self titled debut album.
The doll itself was first unveiled on August 8 during the fifth Legacy of Love Gala in Atlanta, the annual charity event connected to the Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation.
Pat believes that is why the Whitney Houston Barbie can mean more than simply reproducing one famous outfit. She called the doll “a fitting celebration of her extraordinary legacy.”
“Her songs, they define generations, they’ve broken records. She’s touched hearts,” Pat shared. “They’re timeless and soundtracks to millions of lives, and are a testament to a voice that will never be duplicated, and her music is a testament to a voice that will never be duplicated. And that’s why the Barbie is a fitting celebration of her extraordinary legacy, reminding us that her music and her elegance and influence continue to inspire and will inspire new generations.”
More than 20 years after Whitney Houston first discussed the possibility of seeing herself represented through Mattel, the idea now exists in a form fans can actually hold. By choosing the joy, color and movement of “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” the Whitney Houston Barbie does more than recreate an outfit. It captures a moment when Whitney’s voice, style and presence were commanding the world at the same time, introducing that image to another generation while giving longtime fans a new piece of her history.
