After three seasons with the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), the league’s president, Lisa Borders, is stepping down from her position to head the monumental, “Time’s Up” movement.
As the first-ever President and Chief Executive Officer of Time’s Up, Borders looks to continue the organization’s work towards equal opportunities and protections for all women.
According to NBA.com, NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum will fill Borders role in the WNBA, as the league looks for a permanent fill.
“We are extremely grateful for Lisa’s leadership and tireless commitment to the WNBA,” Commissioner Adam Silver said. “This is a natural transition for Lisa knowing what a champion she is for issues involving women’s empowerment and social justice and fortunately for us, she leaves the league with strong tailwinds propelling it forward.”
Borders also released a statement, highlighting her time with the WNBA and expressed her continued support for the women of the league.
“It has been an honor and my absolute privilege leading the WNBA and being part of what it stands for,” Borders said. “I want to thank Adam for giving me the opportunity and support to help grow this league. I am most proud of the W players for their amazing talents on the court and their dedication to making an impact in their communities. I look forward to continuing my support for the W in my new role with Time’s Up. I will always be the W’s biggest advocate and fan.”
However, her work in the WNBA will not be forgotten, as she has increased the league’s attendance and combined viewership throughout her career. In fact, in 2017, the league recorded its highest regular season attendance in six years, and its most-watched season in 2018, over the last four years.
