A Texas woman named Breana has been charged after police said a kidnapping and assault claim she made in March was not true, according to law enforcement statements reported at the time.
Police said the incident began on March 8, when a man reported Breana missing and said her car had been found in a parking lot with the driver door open and her belongings scattered nearby. Hours later, she arrived at a church in Texas wearing only a shirt, bra and underwear, and told people there that she had been kidnapped and attacked by three Black men.
According to authorities, she was taken to a hospital, where doctors reportedly did not find injuries that matched her account. Investigators later said they concluded the scene had been staged and that her injuries were self inflicted. Police said she eventually admitted the story was false.
The police chief said in a statement that the hoax was insulting to the community, and especially offensive to the African American community because of the way the supposed suspects were described.
On Wednesday, officials announced she was charged with two counts of tampering with physical evidence and two counts of tampering with a government record. If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. A charge is not a conviction, and the case was still pending at the time of this post.
