A Pittsburgh woman was shot and killed outside a bar after she turned down a man’s advances, according to charging documents reported by CBS News.
Janese, 29, was shot early on a Friday in January 2016 outside a bar in Pittsburgh. According to the documents, a friend told police that a man named Charles, 41, asked Janese inside the bar where he could get marijuana, and she told him no. A bar employee told police that Charles followed her outside and pressed against her in a sexual manner. She reportedly pushed him away and told him to calm down. The employee said he approached her again after they crossed the street, she pushed him away a second time, and the employee then saw a flash from his hip as Janese fell. A medical examiner ruled her death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the chest.
Police said that around 2 a.m. officers stopped a silver sedan Charles was allegedly driving at high speed. After he reportedly heard a dispatch about the shooting, he fled, led police on a chase and crashed into two vehicles. He was arrested with a gunshot wound to the right temple, and police reportedly found a gun and bags of heroin in the car.
Charles was charged with murder, along with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, drug possession, fleeing police and possession of a firearm by a felon. His attorney denied that he shot Janese over a rejected advance. She said a gun in his jacket went off accidentally when the two hugged outside the bar, and that he ran out of fear for his life. She said he planned to plead not guilty. The charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Our hearts go out to Janese’s family and friends. No woman should ever have to fear for her life for saying no.
