Lauryn Hill is pushing back on a viral retelling of her relationship with Rohan Marley, making it clear that heartbreak does not tell the whole story. The Grammy-winning artist responded after social media creator Mayowa posted a video examining Hill and Marley’s years together and described Marley as a “tyrant.”

Mayowa connected her interpretation of the Lauryn Hill relationship to the emotion heard throughout Hill’s music. In the video shared on Instagram, which garnered over 155,000 views, she said, “I’ve always felt like Lauryn Hill’s music felt so incredibly sad,” before suggesting the singer appeared to be “trying to make up for something.” The commentary eventually prompted Hill herself to enter the conversation.“Her music sometimes seemed self-flagellating, like she was trying to hurt herself to be deserving of love,” Mayowa continued. She also argued that Marley “destroyed” Hill, a characterization Hill directly rejected.
“I might agree with some of the self-deprecation part, there are reasons for that, but while Rohan and I were in relationship I was NOT being done dirty,” Hill wrote in response to the video. Hill did not claim the relationship was without problems. Instead, she said her “upset had layers,” including Marley being unable to “confront his trauma” in ways she believed were necessary for their family.
That distinction is central to Lauryn Hill’s comments. Rather than allowing years of complicated history to be reduced to a simple story about a man mistreating her, Hill described two people who entered the relationship carrying experiences of their own.
“We don’t meet people as blank slates, they have pasts and past hurts. Both of us were working through traumatic experiences, and we met each other trying to help uplift one another,” she continued.
Hill ultimately approached the discussion from a place of grace instead of resentment.
“People may not be perfect in their walk, but they can still battle with their own struggles and then make art about their battles and their victories that help liberate others too. I personally look to afford people grace when and wherever I can.”
The history behind those comments stretches back nearly three decades. Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley were in a long-running relationship spanning more than a decade and became parents to five children together: Zion, Selah, Joshua, John and Sara. Joshua now performs professionally as YG Marley, while Selah has built a career in modeling and music.
Their relationship also overlapped with one of the most important periods of Hill’s career. In a 1999 profile published by TIME, Hill discussed her relationship with Marley while they were raising Zion and Selah. Although reports frequently described the pair as husband and wife, Hill explained at the time, “Our marriage right now is more a spiritual one.”
Motherhood was deeply connected to Hill’s landmark solo era as well. Zion inspired “To Zion,” one of the most personal records on “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” The Recording Academy notes that the album later helped Hill win five Grammys in one night in 1999, including Album of the Year, bringing her career total to seven at that point. She earned her eighth Grammy the following year through her work on “Santana’s Supernatural.”
The exact timeline of Hill and Marley’s romantic split has not always been presented consistently in public reports. That uncertainty is partly explained by Hill herself. In 2011, amid speculation surrounding the birth of her sixth child, Hill issued a statement describing her connection with Marley as complicated. According to UPI, she wrote, “Mr. Marley and I have a long and complex history about which MANY inaccuracies have been reported since the beginning.” She also said they had experienced lengthy periods apart while continuing to share their five children.
Marley has publicly acknowledged his own regrets about how the relationship unfolded. In a 2013 interview with Open Magazine, he reflected on losing Hill and said, “I feel sad that I loved her so much and I faltered in expressing it to her somehow.” He also described himself as heartbroken following the end of their romantic relationship.
The social media video that sparked Lauryn Hill’s latest comments also referenced Marley’s later marriage to Brazilian model Barbara Fialho. According to a wedding feature originally published by People, Marley married Fialho in her hometown of Montes Claros, Brazil, in March 2019. Their marriage ended in 2020.
But Hill has recently made an effort to separate Marley’s later romantic history from assumptions about what happened between them. In May 2026, she posted a birthday tribute to Marley that again challenged longstanding speculation. Hill acknowledged that they had “been through a lot” while publicly stating that Marley “never cheated” on her.
Taken together, Lauryn Hill’s comments paint a much more complicated picture than the viral version of events. She is not denying that the relationship contained disappointment, separation, or emotional wounds.
While Mayowa did appear to accept Lauryn’s explanation in a follow-up video, the singer is drawing a boundary around who gets to define those experiences, and she is making clear that unresolved trauma, personal growth, and the struggle to keep a family together should not automatically be rewritten as a story of betrayal.
