Medical bill pressure reportedly became another heavy burden for Perez Hilton after two major health emergencies disrupted his life, strained his finances, and pushed the longtime celebrity blogger into what he publicly described as “hustle mode.”
According to Page Six, sources close to Hilton said mounting medical expenses had “hit him hard” before authorities transported him from his Miami home to a hospital on August 4 following reports of a mental health crisis. His family has since confirmed that he is receiving medical care.
The financial concerns surfaced during a year already packed with major changes. Hilton, whose legal name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., moved from Las Vegas to his hometown of Miami with his three children in June. The relocation placed him closer to relatives, but it did not immediately bring peace.
“Moving to Miami has not been easy,” a source told Page Six. “It’s where he was brought up and there’s a lot of history there.”
Hilton had already discussed the emotional weight of the move himself. He admitted in a June 26 YouTube video, “I was in a bit of a spiral, because I was overwhelmed with our move to Miami and I didn’t do these things that I know are good for me.”
That transition came shortly after a frightening medical ordeal. In March, Hilton spent 21 days in the hospital after he said taking flu medication without food led to an ulcer, a perforation, and sepsis.
“My stupidity landed me in the hospital for 21 days. It was the worst and best thing that’s ever happened to me,” Hilton said while recounting the experience in a YouTube video.
One month later, Hilton said he required emergency surgery after doctors discovered what he called a “massive” blood clot. A source described the back to back health emergencies as deeply traumatic.
“His health struggles this year have been extreme. The sepsis honestly almost killed him,” the person told Page Six. “I don’t know if people realize just how traumatic and horrific that was for him, both physically, but also emotionally.”
Then came the medical bill pressure. Page Six reported that Hilton faced “pretty extreme” health expenses even though he had insurance. Sources described him as his family’s breadwinner, making the added costs especially stressful.
“Mario has always worked extremely hard, he’s one of the hardest working people I know and so suddenly being faced with these mounting financial pressures was a lot for him,” one source said.
“He just wants to provide a good life for everybody,” the source added. “I know that for that reason, the past few months have been really hard for him.”
Hilton also addressed the expenses while promoting merchandise on Instagram.
“You don’t want to know how much I had to pay in hospital bills with insurance,” he told followers. “That’s why your boy is in hustle mode.”
His experience reflects a much wider problem. KFF reported in June that 44 percent of insured adults under age 65 reported carrying some form of health care debt. Coverage can reduce medical costs, but it does not always protect families from large deductibles, hospital charges, lost working time, or other out of pocket expenses.
The new reporting does not prove that financial stress caused Hilton’s mental health crisis. It does, however, reveal the combination of physical trauma, family responsibility, relocation stress, and medical bill pressure that reportedly surrounded him during an exceptionally difficult period.
In an official statement, Hilton’s team and family said, “We can confirm that Perez is receiving medical care, and our family’s focus right now is on his well-being.”
