David Jonsson will lead Ryan Coogler’s next chapter as the grown Prince T’Challa, with Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, and Denzel Washington joining a Wakanda story built around legacy and a new generation.
“Black Panther 3” officially has its next T’Challa, and Marvel is making the future of Wakanda a family affair. Ryan Coogler announced during the studio’s San Diego Comic Con presentation that David Jonsson will star in the third film, which is scheduled to reach theaters on December 15, 2028.
Jonsson joined Coogler on the Hall H stage alongside Letitia Wright and Winston Duke as Marvel revealed him as the new Black Panther and the son of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa. Jonsson told the crowd he was grateful to join the franchise while keeping details about his role close to the chest.
The casting makes “Black Panther 3” more than another Marvel sequel. It finally answers one of the biggest questions left hanging after “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Jonsson will play Prince T’Challa II, the adult version of the child introduced at the end of “Wakanda Forever.” That child was raised as Toussaint by his mother Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o, before revealing to Shuri that his Wakandan name was T’Challa.
That reveal now looks less like an emotional final beat and more like Coogler planting the seed for an entire generation of storytelling.
Wakanda Forever was reshaped after Boseman died in 2020. Coogler rewrote the sequel following Boseman’s death, placing Shuri at the center of the story as Wakanda mourned King T’Challa. By the end of the film, Shuri had taken on the Black Panther mantle. The introduction of T’Challa’s son then created another path forward without simply replacing the character Boseman made globally iconic.
“Black Panther 3” can now explore something the franchise has never had the chance to fully unpack: what happens when a young man inherits the name, history, expectations, enemies, and mythology of a father he barely had the opportunity to know.
Jonsson also arrives at Wakanda with serious momentum. The British actor built an international profile through Industry, his film debut in “Rye Lane,” and his performance as the synthetic human Andy in “Alien: Romulus.” BAFTA named him the winner of its publicly voted Rising Star Award in 2025. His credits also include the Stephen King adaptation “The Long Walk.”
That makes the decision especially interesting. Black Panther 3″ is not handing one of Marvel’s most valuable roles to an actor whose identity is already tied to another massive superhero franchise. Jonsson comes in with acclaim, genre experience, and enough room for audiences to associate him directly with this version of Prince T’Challa.
Coogler is returning at a very different point in his own career too. Coogler won Best Original Screenplay at the 2026 Academy Awards for “Sinners.” It marked another major milestone for a filmmaker whose relationship with Black Panther already changed the scale of Black-led blockbuster filmmaking.
The numbers behind that legacy are still massive. 2018’s “Black Panther” earned approximately $1.35 billion worldwide. The movie became the first superhero film nominated for Best Picture and ultimately won three Academy Awards.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” remained a major theatrical success despite carrying a completely different emotional weight. The 2022 sequel finished with approximately $859.2 million worldwide. Angela Bassett’s performance as Queen Ramonda earned the first acting Oscar nomination for a performer in a Marvel Studios film.
The third chapter is also bringing another heavyweight into Coogler’s Wakanda. Coogler confirmed in June 2025 that Denzel Washington would appear in the next film after Washington had previously revealed that the filmmaker was creating a part for him. Coogler explained that he had wanted to work with Washington for years. Washington’s exact character remains undisclosed.
Coogler is apparently thinking big visually as well. The filmmaker said the movie will be shot entirely on large format celluloid, which would make it the first MCU feature to use that approach throughout production.
The December 2028 date matters too. “Avengers: Secret Wars” is currently scheduled for December 17, 2027, meaning “Black Panther 3” is positioned after Marvel’s next massive Avengers event. Before that, Marvel has Shuri, M’Baku, and Wakandan characters returning in Avengers: Doomsday, which Marvel lists for December 18, 2026.
That leaves plenty of room for the political structure of Wakanda, Shuri’s role, and the wider MCU itself to look very different by the time Prince T’Challa steps into the spotlight.
The biggest question surrounding “Black Panther 3” is no longer whether Marvel will return to Wakanda. It is what kind of man T’Challa II will become when he gets there. Boseman’s T’Challa carried the responsibility of a king trying to decide what Wakanda owed the outside world. Shuri inherited a nation while grieving her family. Jonsson’s T’Challa will inherit both of their legacies.
That gives Coogler an opportunity to make the third film about more than who wears the suit. Wakanda has always been strongest when its spectacle is connected to family, culture, grief, power, and responsibility.
With a new T’Challa, an Oscar-winning Coogler, Washington entering the franchise, and Shuri still part of the story, Marvel’s next trip to Wakanda could be less about replacing what came before and more about deciding what the Black Panther legacy becomes next.
