LeBron James To Denver? Nuggets Reportedly Make Their Move After Lakers Exit

The LeBron James Nuggets rumors are heating up after Denver reportedly reached out to express interest in James, making one of the wildest NBA free agency possibilities feel just a little more real.

According to Bennett Durando of The Denver Post, the Denver Nuggets reached out to show interest in James after he entered free agency.  Denver joins the growing conversation around James as the league watches where the four time NBA champion will land next.

This is still a rumor stage story, not a signing. But the reason it has legs is simple. Denver is not just any team calling. The Nuggets have Nikola Jokić, a championship tested core and the kind of basketball brain trust that could make sense for James if his next move is truly about winning, fit and peace more than a massive payday.

James informed the Lakers that the franchise could move forward without him because he plans to play elsewhere for the 2026 to 2027 season. Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told Shams Charania the news on Tuesday, marking the end of James’ eight season run in Los Angeles.

That makes the conversation bigger than a casual offseason headline. James is not weighing whether he still belongs in the league. He is weighing where his next chapter makes the most sense. ESPN reported that James is committed to returning for an unprecedented twenty fourth NBA season, though he has not made a decision on whether that season will be his last.

The Lakers chapter was not small.  Lakers governor Jeanie Buss thanked James for eight years with the franchise, including the 2020 championship and the records he broke in purple and gold. ESPN also noted that James finished his Lakers career ranked in the top ten in franchise history in points, assists, field goals and three pointers.

Now comes the bigger question. If LeBron is choosing his next situation, why would Denver be interesting?

Start with Jokić. According to NBA.com, Jokić averaged 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.7 assists while earning his third NBA MVP honor on his official league profile. NBA.com also lists him as an eight time All Star, an NBA champion and a Finals MVP.

That is why the conversation is not just star collecting. It is basketball logic. James has spent more than two decades reading defenses before they fully form. Jokić does the same thing from the center position. One controls the game with size, pace and passing. The other bends the floor with touch, timing and patience. Put them together and every possession becomes a problem for the defense.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said on The Hoop Collective that Denver was an “outlier team” for James. Bleacher Report also reported that Windhorst connected the idea to James’ respect for Jokić and the possibility of pairing two elite basketball minds.

That is the part that makes this rumor feel different. Golden State can sell Steph Curry. Cleveland can sell home. Miami can sell familiarity. Denver can sell the cleanest basketball fit on the board. James would not have to carry every possession. Jokić would not have to create every advantage. Jamal Murray would still have room to be a closer.

Murray averaged 25.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists for Denver. NBA.com also lists Murray as a one time NBA All Star, one time NBA champion and one time All NBA selection.

That gives Denver a real pitch. Not nostalgia. Not noise. A role. A chance to add James as a connector, secondary creator, playoff problem solver and veteran force next to two of the best offensive decision makers in basketball. The LeBron James Nuggets idea is not perfect financially, but on the court, it is easy to understand why people cannot stop talking about it.

The money is where things get complicated. According to NBA.com, the league set the 2026 to 2027 salary cap at $164.961 million, with the tax level at $200.428 million. NBA.com also reported that the first apron is $209.015 million, the second apron is $221.686 million, the non taxpayer mid level exception is $15.044 million and the taxpayer mid level exception is $6.064 million.

Denver is only $4.6 million under the second apron, citing Spotrac, and noted that Murray and Aaron Gordon are signed for a combined $82 million next season. That means the Nuggets would have to get creative if James seriously considered Denver.

That is also why this story may come down to priorities. According to ESPN, James has instructed Paul to speak with interested teams and bring him the available options. ESPN also reported that James wants to keep playing meaningful, competitive basketball.

If that is the real standard, Denver has a case. The Nuggets can offer something few teams can match: a ready made championship ecosystem where James could age gracefully without fading into the background. He would still be LeBron James, but he would not have to be the entire engine every night.

James still has the production to matter. According to NBA.com, James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists, while his official league profile lists him as a twenty two time All Star, twenty one time All NBA selection, four time NBA champion and four time MVP.

That resume does not need dressing up. The question is whether he wants another massive spotlight, a sentimental return or the best basketball fit available. The LeBron James Nuggets conversation hits because Denver could give him something rare this late in his career: a title path where the system already makes sense.

Still, Denver is not alone. Warriors were among the teams expected to pursue James, while the Cavaliers and Heat were also expected to be in the running. ESPN also reported that Golden State had not been given any indication that it was already James’ firm landing spot.

That keeps the race open, and that is why Denver reaching out matters. The Nuggets may not be the favorite, but they are no longer just a hypothetical. They have reportedly made contact, they have the reigning level superstar infrastructure, and they have a basketball fit that is clean enough to force a real conversation.

For now, the LeBron James Nuggets rumor remains exactly that: a rumor with real reporting behind the contact, but no deal. Still, if James is serious about happiness, competition and fit, Denver may have just enough of all three to make this free agency chase very interesting.
