"The Amazing Race" Contestants Sue CBS and Paramount for $8M, Claim Producers Created False Abuse Narrative

“The Amazing Race” contestants Jonathan and Ana Towns have filed an $8 million defamation lawsuit against several companies behind the long-running reality competition, claiming the show’s editing created a damaging and false portrayal that upended their lives.

Jonathan and Ana, who competed on Season 37 of “The Amazing Race,” filed the lawsuit on March 4 in Los Angeles Superior Court against World Race Productions, CBS, Paramount Global, ABC Signature, and Jerry Bruckheimer Films, according to People.

The couple alleges the production team built a misleading narrative that portrayed Jonathan Towns as an abusive husband through selective editing and promotional content.

In their complaint, the Towns accuse the production companies of implementing a “smear strategy so audacious and immoral that it would shock the conscience of even the most cynical propagandist.”

The lawsuit claims the alleged defamation occurred through the “production, editing, marketing, and national broadcast” of the season. The couple is seeking compensatory and punitive damages and has requested a jury trial.

Season 37 of “The Amazing Race” was filmed between May and June 2024 and aired from March through May 2025. Jonathan and Ana ultimately finished in third place in the global competition, which sends teams of two racing through international cities while completing physical and mental challenges on limited budgets.

The Emmy Award-winning series, hosted by Phil Keoghan since its debut in 2001, remains one of television’s longest-running reality competition shows.

However, the lawsuit alleges producers intentionally positioned Jonathan as the season’s primary villain.

According to the complaint, the program depicted him — “a private individual with no antecedent public profile” — as “a morally depraved, brutal and abusive spouse,” presenting that portrayal to CBS’s “tens of millions of viewers.”

The filing also claims producers had footage that could have shown Jonathan “accurately and completely,” but instead made the “deliberate determination to suppress those materials and to substitute in their place a constructed, false, and highly damaging portrayal.”

Court documents describe moments of tension during filming, stating Jonathan experienced a “meltdown” and “clear emotional anguish” during production.

The complaint says he raised concerns with human resources about what he perceived as bias from production staff, but continued competing after receiving assurances that the race would remain fair.

After filming concluded, Jonathan Towns was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The lawsuit argues that behaviors shown on the broadcast were “behavioral manifestations” tied to that diagnosis and “not volitional acts of cruelty or intentional interpersonal aggression.”

The filing also alleges contestants were not provided access to a licensed mental health professional or “any support whatsoever of medical, psychological, or pastoral nature” during or after filming.

According to the lawsuit, the broadcast triggered harassment, threats, and mockery directed at Jonathan from viewers who “accepted the false portrayal as truthful.” Ana Towns also claims she experienced reputational damage and emotional distress as a result of the televised storyline.
