Angela Simmons sat down with Cam Newton to revisit their brief 2011 encounter, proving that even a Heisman winner can strike out on a first date. What started as a series of viral paparazzi photos was actually a night of pure awkwardness, triggered by Cam’s bad jokes and self-congratulatory energy.
The vibe shifted immediately when Simmons broke down her perspective of the night they met at a diner. “We sat down and talked. This is the first time I met you. Mutual friend connected us,” Simmons explained. However, the connection didn’t exactly spark. According to Angela, Cam spent the evening in his own world. “You the whole time [were] making jokes and laughing at your own jokes. You were patting yourself on the back and laughing. I didn’t know what to expect. You’re making jokes that I thought were just not funny. I was ready to go. You sat across from me… I can’t remember the joke, but I remember thinking this is not funny. And you were like, tapping your own back. I said, ‘Oh, I’m ready to go. I promise.’ It felt arrogant that night. For real.”
Cam, for his part, seemed genuinely stunned by the review of his 20-year-old self. “I ain’t know me to be that corny though. I had a lot on my mind… that was the night before I got drafted. I may have had an out-of-body experience,” he joked, attributing the behavior to pre-draft nerves. He even questioned the logistics of the setup, asking, “Did we share this mutual friend?” which has since sparked a wave of memes regarding his selective memory.
While the two eventually became friends, Angela was clearly on it never being a romance. “And then we patched it up… when I got to know more about you, I was like, ‘All right, dope person.’ But at first I was ready to go. That was kind of the end of our dating era. We didn’t actually date. I wouldn’t say the word date,” she clarified.
Despite the rumors that followed them for years, the reality was just two people at a diner, one laughing at his own jokes, and the other counting the minutes until the cab arrived.
