Former NFL star Warren Sapp is facing scrutiny after a viral video appeared to show him kicking a Florida State fan during a heated argument in the rain, with the man’s daughter standing nearby.
Video
The video began circulating on X Tuesday night, October 20, after being shared by a user identified as Lashy Bills. The confrontation unfolded during a rainy tailgate gathering where the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle was holding an umbrella. The footage shows a man wearing Florida State gear approaching Sapp while attempting to get out of the rain. As the man moved closer and appeared to make contact with the umbrella, the interaction quickly became hostile.
“Don’t touch my umbrella, bro,” Sapp warned before appearing to kick toward the man.
The exchange happened within view of the man’s daughter, who remained beside her father as tensions escalated. Sapp then extended his hand to the girl for a handshake, creating an unusual moment in an otherwise confrontational encounter.
Rather than walking away immediately, the father tried to explain himself and reminded Sapp that he had supported him throughout his football career.
“It’s my daughter, you’ve got to be true,” the man told Sapp while gesturing toward the child.
His appeal did not immediately end the disagreement. The two men continued exchanging words before the father and daughter eventually walked away, with the man still directing comments toward Sapp.
The video has since attracted attention across sports media, including coverage from MARCA and OutKick. However, the available footage does not establish everything that happened before the recording began. The exact circumstances surrounding the initial contact with Sapp’s umbrella also remain unclear.
For Sapp, the incident brings unwanted attention to a career that includes some of football’s most prestigious accomplishments.
According to the University of Miami’s athletic records, Sapp played for the Hurricanes from 1992 through 1994, becoming one of the program’s most decorated defensive players. In 1994, he earned consensus All-American honors and captured both the Lombardi Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy.
His college career also placed him directly in the middle of Miami’s historic rivalry with Florida State, a matchup that regularly carried national championship implications during that era.
The former defensive lineman went on to become a dominant NFL player. The Pro Football Hall of Fame credits him with 96.5 career sacks, seven Pro Bowl selections, and the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award in 1999. He also helped the Buccaneers win Super Bowl XXXVII before receiving his Hall of Fame induction in 2013.
The timing of the confrontation follows another chapter in Sapp’s professional life.
NBC Sports reported that Sapp resigned from Deion Sanders’ coaching staff at the University of Colorado in February 2026 after two seasons with the program. He joined Colorado in 2024 and eventually became the team’s pass rush coordinator.
Colorado confirmed his departure in an official statement, explaining that Sapp was leaving to pursue other opportunities. His position involved working with younger athletes and helping develop the team’s defensive front.
Separately, Sapp has also been involved in a recent dispute with Tampa officials. According to WUSF, he filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city in September 2026 after being removed from City Hall during a confrontation surrounding a City Council meeting. Sapp alleges that officials violated his First Amendment rights, while Tampa police maintained that he was removed following a disturbance.
That legal disagreement is unrelated to the latest tailgate encounter.
The viral incident also comes days after Miami defeated Florida State in one of the season’s most dramatic college football matchups.
According to the Associated Press, the Hurricanes defeated the Seminoles 43-35 in double overtime on October 17, maintaining their undefeated record. Miami subsequently climbed to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2002.
Although Sapp’s history with the Hurricanes provides background to the rivalry, the footage does not establish that football loyalty caused the confrontation. The visible disagreement centered on personal space and the umbrella.
