At 4:30 a.m., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to reports of a house fire. By the time more than 20 emergency units arrived, flames had taken over the residence.
On arrival, units found a fully engulfed house on fire, including a partial collapse of the roof,” said MDFR battalion chief Victoria Byrd. “Units were able to quickly extinguish the fire; however, the fire took over control [of] most of the house. There were no reported injuries, no fatalities, and the fire is under investigation.”
Spoelstra was coaching in Denver the night before. The Heat’s charter flight landed in Miami just after 5 a.m., and he headed straight to the scene. Video footage captured him walking the perimeter of the destroyed home, visibly shaken. Assistant coach Chris Quinn was also seen arriving at the site.
Byrd noted the fire was intense and difficult to access.
“We used multiple aerial apparatuses, fire engines, and rescues to help combat this incident,” she said. A privacy wall and heavy tree coverage made access to the property even more challenging.
Property records show Spoelstra purchased the five-bedroom home in December 2023. Neighbors told local news that it had been undergoing major renovations and that a large party had been hosted recently.
Spoelstra, 55, is one of the longest-tenured coaches in the NBA, with two championships and a recent $120 million extension. No other homes were damaged in the fire.
