Stephen A. Smith Breaks Bread With Trump After Their Ugly Public Feud: Black Women’s Unemployment and HBCU Funding Come Up at Dinner

After months of trading public insults, Stephen A. Smith joined Trump for a private White House dinner, where he reportedly raised concerns about rising unemployment among Black women and the impact of Trump's DEI crackdown on HBCU funding.

Stephen A. Smith Breaks Bread With Trump After Their Ugly Public Feud: Black Women’s Unemployment and HBCU Funding Come Up at Dinner

Stephen A. Smith went from challenging Donald Trump to a public debate to sitting across from him at the White House dinner table, marking an unexpected turn in their months-long feud.

The ESPN commentator joined Trump, comedian Bill Maher, and musician Kid Rock for a private dinner on Thursday, October 15. The gathering brought together four outspoken personalities who have publicly disagreed on politics, government policies, and Trump’s leadership.

By Friday, Trump was speaking favorably about the evening, despite previously attacking Smith’s intelligence and political qualifications.

“The dinner last night with Kid Rock, Stephen A. and Bill Maher was great,” Trump told reporters. “I think they had a good time.”

He added, “Stephen A. is great. Bill Maher, I’ll tell you what, he likes me a lot more than people understand, and I actually like him.”

Kid Rock offered additional details during an appearance on Fox News, describing the gathering as “epic.”

“Two Democrats, two Republicans sit down, break bread, have laughs, have tough conversations on a lot of the issues,” he explained, revealing that discussions covered “everything from socialism and communism to the war in Iran.”

According to Kid Rock, the group agreed that “socialism and communism [have] no place to have a foothold in our government.”

However, Smith reportedly used his opportunity with Trump to address issues directly affecting Black Americans, particularly unemployment among Black women and financial support for historically Black colleges and universities.

Those concerns come as Black women face troubling employment conditions. According to September 2026 labor statistics, unemployment among Black women increased from 5.6% in August to 6.8% in September, significantly higher than the 3.6% unemployment rate among adult women overall.

Smith also reportedly questioned whether Trump’s aggressive dismantling of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives has discouraged corporations from financially supporting HBCUs.

Kid Rock recalled Smith suggesting that Trump’s administration had put a “dagger through the heart of DEI,” potentially frightening away companies that previously donated to historically Black institutions.

The musician claimed he responded on behalf of Trump, emphasizing the importance of continued corporate investments in Black education.

“We want to encourage corporations to continue funding HBCUs and donating to them because we know how important education is … to strengthening Black families,” Kid Rock explained.

While the discussion reportedly addressed those concerns, no specific new funding commitments or policy changes were announced following the dinner.

The friendly atmosphere represents a significant departure from the heated exchange between Trump and Smith earlier this year.

Their public disagreement escalated in June when Smith criticized Trump’s plans to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden. Smith argued that the presidential appearance could create unnecessary security restrictions, disrupt traffic, and interfere with basketball fans enjoying the championship.

Trump responded by unloading on Smith through Truth Social, calling him an “arrogant fool” and a “low IQ individual.”

He also dismissed the possibility of Smith entering politics, describing him as “Totally unqualified to ever think of running for high political office.”

Smith refused to back down. During his SiriusXM sports program, he challenged Trump to a debate, declaring that he would “smoke” him “any time, any place, anywhere.”

The argument attracted additional attention because Smith had previously entertained questions about potentially seeking the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.

During an appearance on CBS Sunday Morning, Smith discussed the possibility of entering politics, presenting himself as someone concerned about everyday Americans.

“I think that the American people deserve to listen to and hear from somebody who genuinely cares about making life better for them,” he explained.

Although Smith subsequently downplayed his interest in actually running, his political commentary has increasingly extended beyond sports and into national policy debates.

His appearance at the White House now raises questions about whether the dinner could establish a more productive relationship with someone he once publicly challenged.

Smith was not the only longtime Trump critic invited.

Maher, who previously attended a White House dinner with Trump and Kid Rock in 2025, returned after receiving another invitation.

During a recent episode of his “Club Random” podcast, Maher revealed that Trump contacted him “out of the blue” and was “really nice” during their exchange.

Maher recalled responding, “You know what, you’re the president of the United States …I’m just glad we’re talking.”

During Thursday’s dinner, Maher reportedly raised concerns about Afghan interpreters who assisted American military and government personnel and the challenges surrounding their relocation to the United States.

The gathering also comes as Smith continues to navigate his increasingly visible role in political conversations ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

For now, the biggest unanswered question is whether Smith’s face-to-face conversation with Trump will produce anything meaningful for the Black communities he reportedly advocated for.

After months of exchanging insults, the two men have demonstrated that they can share a dinner table. Whether that conversation translates into action on Black unemployment and HBCU funding remains to be seen.
