Gayle King’s ex-husband is once again addressing the affair that ended their marriage — and this time, he’s publicly apologizing after the veteran broadcaster recently revisited the scandal in painful detail.
As previously reported, Gayle opened up during her appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast about the moment she walked into her home and discovered her then-husband, William Bumpus, cheating with one of her close friends while their children were still young. The shocking confession quickly went viral online, sparking renewed attention around the decades-old betrayal.
Now, Bumpus is speaking out.
In a statement to TMZ, Bumpus apologized directly to Gayle and their family for the damage caused by his infidelity.
“My deepest apologies to Gayle, to our daughter Kirby and her husband, Virgil, to our son William and his wife, Elise, and to our three grandchildren, for the pain I caused decades ago,” he said. “Those actions were mine.”
Bumpus also acknowledged that Gayle had every right to publicly discuss the situation after carrying the pain for years.
“Gayle has every right to share what was a painful chapter that changed the trajectory of our marriage and our family nearly forty years ago,” he added.
The attorney went on to praise Gayle for supporting him through law school and for helping build what he described as a successful co-parenting relationship after their divorce.
“It was Gayle who encouraged and supported me through getting my Yale Law degree,” Bumpus shared. “And it was Gayle who chose, with me, to co-parent successfully from the very beginning.”
Despite the very public fallout from the affair, Bumpus says the former couple remains “in a good place” today and credited Gayle’s friendship and support for helping shape the man he’s become.
The former pair divorced in 1993 after 11 years of marriage and share two children together.
