George Zimmerman was released from jail on Tuesday after posting a $9,000 bond, according to Fox News and other outlets. He was arrested earlier in the week after his girlfriend, Samantha, called 911 and told a dispatcher that he pointed a gun at her, smashed a coffee table and pushed her outside during an argument at her home.
Zimmerman faces one count of aggravated assault, a third degree felony, along with misdemeanor counts of battery and criminal mischief. His arraignment is set for January 7, 2014. Zimmerman was acquitted in July of second degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin.
Prosecutors had asked for a $50,000 bond. The judge set the lower amount and ordered Zimmerman to wear an electronic monitor, stay away from Samantha and not contact her, stay in Florida, and not possess any firearms or ammunition. A prosecutor also told the court that Samantha said Zimmerman had tried to choke her in an earlier incident that was never reported, and that she feared for her life.
Zimmerman has denied pointing a gun at her. In his own 911 call, he said she was the one who broke the table. His public defender, Daniel Megaro, said he is confident Zimmerman will be acquitted.
