J.R. Smith is facing a new legal situation in Texas after authorities booked the former NBA standout on an assault charge involving alleged family violence.
According to Hunt County jail records cited by TMZ, Smith was arrested Tuesday, September 29, and booked on a charge listed as assault causing bodily injury, family violence. The outlet reported that Smith remained at the Hunt County Detention Center as of its latest update and that jail records showed no bond had been set.
Details surrounding the alleged incident remain limited. Public reporting available Tuesday did not identify the alleged victim or explain what authorities say happened before Smith’s arrest.
The J.R. Smith arrest comes only months after the 40-year-old celebrated a major milestone away from professional basketball.
According to WBTV, Smith graduated from North Carolina A&T State University in May after returning to school years after his NBA career. He enrolled at the Greensboro HBCU in 2021 and joined its golf program while pursuing his undergraduate education.
Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Applied Cultural Thought, according to reporting ahead of his commencement. He entered college after spending nearly two decades associated with professional basketball, making the degree one of the most notable chapters of his post NBA life.
Smith spoke publicly about how significant the accomplishment was to him. In a graduation message, he reflected on the path from basketball to earning his degree, writing, “31 years from now, you’ll have played 16 years in the NBA, won 2 championships, but most importantly, be a college graduate.”
Before returning to the classroom, Smith built a lengthy NBA résumé.
According to the NBA, Smith played 16 seasons in the league and won two championships. He was also named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year for the 2012 to 2013 season while playing for the New York Knicks. NBA records show Smith appeared in 80 games that season, all as a reserve, while averaging 18.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.
His career included stops with New Orleans, Denver, New York, Cleveland and Los Angeles. Smith became an important piece of the Cleveland Cavaliers team that captured the 2016 NBA championship, helping Cleveland overcome a 3 to 1 deficit against the Golden State Warriors in the Finals. According to the NBA’s account of his Cavaliers tenure, Smith hit two three pointers during a pivotal stretch of Game 7 as Cleveland completed its comeback and secured the franchise’s first championship.
Smith later joined the Los Angeles Lakers and earned his second championship during the team’s 2020 title run. NBA statistics show that he appeared in 10 postseason games for Los Angeles that year.
The J.R. Smith arrest is not the first time the former NBA player has faced legal trouble.
One of the most serious incidents in Smith’s past stemmed from a June 2007 vehicle crash in New Jersey that killed his friend and passenger Andre Bell. According to a contemporaneous report from The Washington Post, Bell died from severe head injuries following the crash, while Smith suffered injuries to his shoulder and scratches. Authorities cited Smith for failure to stop at a stop sign and improper passing as the investigation continued.
ESPN reported in 2009 that Smith later pleaded guilty to reckless driving in connection with the crash. A grand jury had declined to indict him on a vehicular manslaughter charge. Smith received a 90 day jail sentence, with 60 days suspended on the condition that he complete 500 hours of community service. Reports at the time said he ultimately served 24 days behind bars.
During the 2009 court proceeding, Smith addressed the fatal crash and Bell’s death.
“It’s been unbearable to deal with,” Smith told the court, according to ESPN. “I am deeply sorry. I never intended for this to happen. It tears me up that it went down like that.”
His latest arrest arrives during a very different stage of his public life. Since leaving the NBA, Smith has drawn attention for returning to college, competing in collegiate golf and completing a degree more than two decades after entering professional basketball directly from high school.
The current Texas case, however, remains in its early stages. As of the latest publicly available reporting Tuesday, authorities had not released a detailed narrative explaining the circumstances behind the alleged family violence incident, and no reported court outcome had been reached.
