Hakeem Jeffries isn’t backing down after Donald Trump spent Thursday morning calling for his prosecution.
The House Minority Leader took to Instagram to deliver a sharp, direct response to Trump’s accusations that Jeffries “incited violence” ahead of the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Looking directly into the camera, the Brooklyn Democrat didn’t hold back, “What’s wrong with you, bro? Why do I stay on your mind?”
The beef started when Trump hopped on Truth Social to claim that Jeffries’ previous “maximum warfare” comments regarding redistricting were the catalyst for the assassination attempt carried out by Cole Tomas Allen.
Trump’s post, which labeled Jeffries a “lunatic,” suggested the Congressman should be charged with a crime. Jeffries quickly flipped the script, ignoring the legal noise to focus on the struggles of everyday Americans. “Gas prices are surging, grocery bills are out of control, Americans are drowning in your failed economy and you ain’t got nothing better to do?” Jeffries asked in his video. “You need an intervention, get some help! The American people are suffering because you’re a complete and total failure.”
Jeffries characterized Trump’s social media activity as a “deranged rant,” expressing frustration that he had to address the “out-of-control” behavior while he was trying to enjoy the New York Knicks’ playoff run.
Despite the intensity of the accusations, Jeffries made it clear that he isn’t losing any sleep over the threats. As he continues his push to lead the Democrats back to a House majority and potentially become the first Black Speaker of the House, his message to the White House was simple: “You ain’t intimidating a damn person.”
