For years, Idris Elba’s name sat at the center of the James Bond conversation. Fans debated it, social media pushed it, and Hollywood insiders repeatedly floated the possibility. But according to Elba himself, the speculation never reflected what was happening behind closed doors.
Speaking to PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of “Masters of the Universe” on May 18, Elba shut down the long-running rumors and made it clear he was never seriously being considered to replace Daniel Craig as 007.
“My name’s not getting thrown out, no way,” Elba told PEOPLE. “They’re going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I can’t wait. It’s going to be amazing.”
He then added, “I’m honestly not in the race ever. I wasn’t in the race in the first place.”
The comments arrive as the search for the next James Bond continues to dominate entertainment headlines following Craig’s final appearance in 2021’s “No Time to Die.”
How Idris Elba Became Attached to the Bond Conversation
Even though Elba now says he was never truly in contention, his name became heavily linked to the franchise over the last decade. The speculation gained major traction in 2014 after leaked Sony emails revealed then studio executive Amy Pascal believed Elba “should be the next Bond.”
From there, the conversation took on a life of its own. Fans praised the idea online, while betting markets and entertainment outlets repeatedly included Elba in lists of possible successors.
At the same time, Elba has openly discussed how parts of the public reaction crossed the line. During a 2023 appearance on the SmartLess podcast, the actor explained that what initially felt flattering eventually became exhausting once the discussion centered heavily on race.
“Those that weren’t happy about the idea made the whole thing disgusting and off-putting,” Elba said at the time.
The Hunt for the Next James Bond Is Officially Underway
With Daniel Craig’s Bond era officially over, producers are now searching for a younger actor to lead the franchise into its next chapter. Reports from PEOPLE earlier this month confirmed that Bond auditions have officially begun.
While several names continue circulating online, no actor has been publicly confirmed for the role.
The Bond franchise has historically reinvented itself every few years, with actors including Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, and Daniel Craig each bringing a different tone to the iconic spy.
Now, whoever lands the role faces one of Hollywood’s most scrutinized casting decisions. And despite years of online campaigning, Idris Elba says he was never actually part of that race.
