Don Lemon to Trump: Why Are You So Obsessed With Me

The independent journalist filmed his response from bed after Trump spent part of his Correspondents’ Dinner speech on him, and he closed it by saying he would make a better president

The Don Lemon Trump feud picked back up Friday night after Donald Trump used part of his White House Correspondents’ Dinner speech to talk about the former CNN anchor, and Lemon answered with a video filmed from his bed. Lemon opened by explaining he was not watching. He was home, winding down, and his phone started going off. People were telling him, in his words, that some old man was on television ranting about him. It turned out to be Trump.

Trump spoke for roughly an hour at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, and he worked through a long list of people he does not like. Journalists Don Lemon and Lawrence O’Donnell were on it. So were Chris Christie, Adam Schiff, Bruce Springsteen and Jane Fonda. On Lemon, Trump returned to the nickname he has been using since 2018, saying that once you say certain things about someone you never make a comeback, and that “It’s not like, ‘Oh, gee, hey Don, let’s have dinner some night.’” He also took shots at Anderson Cooper and Dylan Mulvaney.

What makes the Don Lemon Trump exchange land differently this time is where Lemon took it. He did not spend the video defending his record or relitigating CNN. He went straight at the question of what Trump was doing with his time. Lemon asked why Trump was talking about him instead of making things better for the average American. He pointed to a war he says Trump started and asked why he was not working to get the country out of it. He pointed to gas prices. Then he asked the question that is going to travel further than anything else he said: why are you so obsessed with me.

He ended it by connecting the moment back to the presidential talk that has been following him for two weeks. Lemon said the attention is exactly why people keep asking whether he is going to run, and that he would certainly be a better president than Trump, because he would not be obsessed with him. Then he said good night and ended the video.

That is a real escalation. Ten days ago Lemon was hedging. On the “Can’t Be Censored” podcast with hosts Travis Dhanraj and Karman Wong, he said he was “totally serious” about the possibility of a 2028 run but framed it as something voters would have to want first, and said he would rather build a campaign on five and ten dollar contributions than court major donors. He also argued that political experience is no longer a requirement, pointing to Trump’s own lack of one before 2016. Friday night he dropped the hedging entirely.

The same podcast appearance is what put him back on the White House radar in the first place. Lemon compared the MAGA movement to the Nazi Party during that interview, qualifying it by saying it was the American version without the Holocaust, and said the country had careened into fascism. White House spokesman Davis Ingle responded by calling him “a low ratings loser that no one takes seriously” and suggesting he seek psychiatric help. Trump himself had not weighed in publicly until Friday.

The history behind the Don Lemon Trump back and forth goes back nearly a decade and it has always been personal. Trump first used the “dumbest man on television” line in 2018 after Lemon interviewed LeBron James, who had accused him of using sports to divide the country. He pulled it back out in April 2023 when CNN fired Lemon, posting that his only question was what took them so long. Lemon has spent the years since building The Don Lemon Show independently on YouTube and Substack.

The stakes are considerably higher now than they were during the Twitter years. Lemon is one of 39 people facing federal charges connected to a protest that interrupted a service at a church in Minnesota over allegations that a pastor there worked for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He has pleaded not guilty, and he has maintained that he was documenting the demonstration rather than participating in it. A federal magistrate judge later rejected a Homeland Security Investigations request for search warrants that would have collected subscriber names, addresses, phone numbers and IP addresses of people who watch his YouTube channel.

There is also the setting. Friday’s dinner was a rescheduled event, moved after a gunman opened fire at the original April gathering. Outgoing White House Correspondents’ Association president Weijia Jiang used her opening remarks to say the attack had tested everyone in the room and revealed something worth fighting for. Among the journalists honored that night was the Wall Street Journal team that reported on Trump’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Trump thanked his hosts and said he had made friends, and told the room the evening had been interesting and that he had not known what to expect. He also joked about running for a fourth term.

Lemon’s video does the thing that most responses to Trump fail to do. It refuses the frame. He never argued about whether he is smart or whether his ratings are good. He treated the attack itself as the evidence, and let the obsession question sit there. Whether that becomes a campaign or stays a very effective Friday night clip is the part nobody can answer yet, including Lemon.
