Jay-Z Has 99 Problems, and His Super Bowl Setlist Might Be One: 11 Hits That Should Make the 13 Minute Slot

Jay-Z has enough classic records to fill an entire stadium concert, but squeezing his biggest hits into a Super Bowl halftime performance would be a serious challenge. With more than three decades of music to choose from, Hov could deliver everything from street anthems to chart topping collaborations that introduced him to audiences around the world.

Jay-Z has reportedly selected himself to headline Super Bowl LXI in February 2027. Although the NFL and Roc Nation have not officially confirmed the performance, the report has opened the door to one major question. What songs would make his setlist?

Hov has been involved in the halftime show’s creative direction since Roc Nation partnered with the NFL in 2019. If he finally takes center stage, his catalog offers plenty of possibilities.

“Public Service Announcement” would be one of the strongest opening choices. Featured on his 2003 album “The Black Album,” the Just Blaze-produced record remains one of Jay-Z’s signature concert introductions. Its dramatic production and instantly recognizable opening bars could set the tone before transitioning into his biggest mainstream hits.

“Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)” would be another natural selection. Released in 1998, the “Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life” single helped introduce Jay-Z to a much wider audience. The song reached No. 2 in the United Kingdom. Its famous Annie sample could easily become a massive stadium singalong.

“Big Pimpin’” featuring UGK deserves consideration for its unmistakable Timbaland production and lasting impact on hip-hop. The 2000 single reached No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, helping cement Jay-Z’s commercial dominance. A shortened version featuring the iconic instrumental could bring some early 2000s energy into the performance.

The party could continue with “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me).” Released in 2000, the Pharrell-assisted record peaked at No. 11 on the Hot 100. Its infectious hook and Neptunes production make it an obvious candidate for a quick transition that keeps the crowd moving.

“Excuse Me Miss” could provide a smoother moment. The Pharrell collaboration reached No. 8 on the Hot 100 in 2003. Bringing Pharrell onto the stage for a brief appearance would create another opportunity to celebrate their musical partnership.

However, a Jay-Z halftime performance would be incomplete without “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” and “99 Problems.”

Both songs appeared on “The Black Album,” and each offers a different side of Hov. “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, while “99 Problems” became one of his most recognizable solo anthems. Their aggressive production and unforgettable hooks could anchor the show’s biggest rap-focused segment.

“Holy Grail,” featuring Justin Timberlake, would introduce another major commercial success. The 2013 single peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 and won a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Timberlake’s dramatic vocals would offer a natural shift from the harder rap records into the show’s pop crossover moments.

Then there is “Crazy in Love” featuring Beyoncé.

The 2003 hit spent eight consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains one of their most successful collaborations. Beyoncé appearing alongside Jay-Z would undoubtedly be a major television moment, especially with the song’s explosive horn arrangement and immediately recognizable opening.

“Umbrella” featuring Rihanna could deliver another surprise. The 2007 smash topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of Rihanna’s defining records. Jay-Z opens the original song with a guest verse, making it an easy addition to a medley if Rihanna were available to join him.

Still, “Empire State of Mind” featuring Alicia Keys feels like the strongest possible finale.

The 2009 anthem spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Jay-Z’s first chart topper as a lead artist. Alicia Keys performing the soaring chorus while Hov celebrates his journey from Brooklyn to global superstardom would deliver the kind of closing moment a Super Bowl production demands.

The biggest obstacle would be time. Super Bowl halftime performances typically last about 13 minutes, meaning Jay-Z would need to combine shortened verses, recognizable hooks, and seamless transitions instead of performing complete songs.
