Chris Brown just landed the kind of courtroom win he has been looking for since a Los Angeles jury hit him with a nearly $13 million verdict this summer.
A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge granted Brown’s request for a new trial on damages in his legal battle with former housekeeper Maria Avila, but there is a major condition attached. According to TMZ, Avila can avoid another damages trial if she agrees to reduce her $12.9 million award to $9.5 million.
That potentially puts about $3.4 million back in Brown’s column.
More importantly for the singer, the ruling represents a significant change in momentum after several recent decisions in the same case went against him.
According to TMZ’s report on the latest court documents, the judge found there was “insufficient evidence of permanent nerve damage and of the value assigned to future pain and suffering” to support the full amount awarded by the jury.
That distinction matters. The ruling does not wipe away Brown’s liability for the 2020 dog attack, nor does it completely overturn the jury’s verdict. Instead, the judge took issue with the size of the damages awarded to Avila. She now faces a choice between accepting the lower $9.5 million figure or returning to court for a new trial focused on damages.
Either route gives Brown something he did not have when the jury returned its verdict in June: meaningful leverage over the size of the payout.
The case stems from a December 2020 incident at Brown’s Tarzana, California, home. Avila was working at the property when she was attacked by Brown’s Caucasian shepherd, Hades. Avila testified that the attack caused serious injuries, including wounds to her face and arm that required extensive medical treatment.
After years of litigation, a Los Angeles jury found Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, liable in June 2026. Court records reviewed by the Los Angeles Times showed the jury awarded Avila $12.9 million in damages. Her sister, Patricia Avila, received $885,000 for emotional distress, while Maria’s husband was awarded $50,000.
Brown denied wrongdoing during the litigation.
The verdict quickly became more than a number on paper. Avila began pursuing Brown’s income as she sought to collect the judgment, putting the singer’s lucrative touring business directly in the conversation.
In August, Brown tried to stop Avila from reaching income connected to his tour with Usher. The court previously ordered Brown to disclose information about his income, including concert compensation, appearance fees, merchandise revenue, and YouTube earnings.
Brown then asked for additional time to turn over information about his income. That request did not go his way either.
On August 27, a judge denied Brown’s request for an additional month to provide the financial information Avila was seeking as part of her collection efforts.
Those decisions made the aftermath of the Chris Brown lawsuit especially costly. The singer was not simply fighting the original verdict anymore. He was also trying to limit how quickly Avila could move against income generated by one of the biggest assets in his career: touring.
Brown and Usher have been playing stadium dates together on The R&B Tour, with Ticketmaster listing stops at major venues including MetLife Stadium, Soldier Field, Levi’s Stadium, SoFi Stadium and State Farm Stadium throughout the summer and fall.
That is why the latest ruling is bigger than a routine procedural victory.
Brown asked the court to revisit what he considered an excessive verdict, and this time the judge agreed that part of the award went beyond what the evidence supported. Even if Avila accepts $9.5 million instead of choosing another damages trial, Brown would be facing a multimillion-dollar reduction from the jury’s original $12.9 million award to her.
The decision also arrives after Brown challenged what jurors were allowed to hear during the trial.
Brown argued that the proceedings were unfairly affected by references to his past, including his 2009 felony assault case involving Rihanna. Avila pushed back on that argument in court filings.
The judge’s latest decision, however, appears to give Brown relief on a different issue: whether the evidence justified the amount of damages the jury assigned to Avila’s alleged permanent injuries and future suffering.
For Brown, that is still a substantial win.
It is also important to separate this ruling from some of the other legal matters surrounding the singer. Brown has faced multiple lawsuits and court proceedings over the years, but not every filing against him has resulted in a loss. In June, for example, federal court records showed that Brown and several defendants reached a settlement in principle with songwriter Steve Chokpelle, professionally known as Muso, resolving claims against Brown in a copyright dispute. The terms of that settlement were not disclosed in the filing.
The Avila case is different because it already produced a jury finding of liability and an eight-figure damages award. Brown’s recent legal setbacks largely involved his attempts to deal with the financial consequences of that verdict.
Now, for the first time since the jury handed down its decision, the size of that award is moving substantially in Brown’s direction.
Avila could still choose another damages trial rather than accept the reduced amount, meaning the financial fight is not necessarily finished. And the judge’s decision should not be confused with a finding that the underlying attack did not happen or that Brown bears no liability. The jury’s liability determination remains separate from the dispute over how much Avila should receive.
Still, knocking roughly $3.4 million off a $12.9 million award would be no small adjustment.
After weeks in which Avila gained ground in her efforts to collect against Brown’s income, and Brown failed to secure additional time in that financial fight, the latest ruling changes the pressure surrounding the case. The singer remains on the hook for a massive judgment, but the question is no longer whether the original $12.9 million award will simply stand untouched.
Now Avila has a decision to make, and Brown finally has a major ruling in his favor.
