Rapper K. Carbon is making one thing clear: just because a city has Memphis in its name doesn’t mean Memphis natives claim it as part of their hometown.

During a recent appearance on The Baller Alert Show, the Memphis rapper broke down the difference between Memphis, Tennessee, and West Memphis, Arkansas, explaining why locals don’t consider the two places the same. The conversation touched on how people from different parts of Memphis identify with their neighborhoods and why the city’s location matters when discussing where someone is actually from.
“I’m from the north, but Ain’t no part of Memphis that’s different,” K. Carbon explained.
She emphasized that while Memphis has different neighborhoods and communities, the entire city still shares the same identity.
“Memphis is Memphis…I think he addressing when I said the West Memphis [expletive].”
Made to order and shipped to your door.
That’s where K. Carbon drew the line.
“West Memphis is not Memphis at all.”
For anyone unfamiliar with the geography, West Memphis is an actual city in Arkansas, located directly across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tennessee. Although the two cities are neighbors and share regional connections, they sit in entirely different states.
K. Carbon questioned why the Arkansas city even carries the Memphis name.
And while the rapper acknowledged that West Memphis is geographically west of Memphis, she explained that its location doesn’t automatically make it part of the Tennessee city.
“Like it is west of Memphis, but it ain’t Memphis no more.”
The distinction might seem minor to outsiders, especially considering how closely the two cities are connected, but K. Carbon’s comments show how seriously locals can take hometown representation.
West Memphis is part of the larger Memphis metropolitan area, which includes communities across Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi. However, belonging to the same metropolitan region doesn’t mean the cities share the same municipal or state boundaries.
K. Carbon made that distinction with a simple explanation of what happens when drivers cross the Mississippi River.
For K. Carbon, the issue isn’t about how close West Memphis sits to Memphis or how much the communities have in common. It’s about where the Tennessee city actually ends.
And according to the rapper, once you cross that bridge into Arkansas, you can still be in the Memphis area, but you can’t say you’re in Memphis anymore.
“You in a whole new state,” she added.
