Janet Jackson’s absence from the upcoming “Michael” biopic became one of the biggest talking points at the film’s Los Angeles premiere, where her sister La Toya Jackson revealed why the superstar was not involved. According to La Toya, Janet was invited to participate but chose not to move forward.
“She was asked and she kindly declined,” La Toya said on the red carpet while speaking with Variety. “So you have to respect her wishes.”
That short explanation answered weeks of speculation surrounding why one of the most famous members of the Jackson family would not be portrayed in a movie centered on Michael Jackson’s life. With Janet playing such a major role in the family’s music legacy and global fame, many expected her presence to be part of the story. Instead, she stepped back.
La Toya made it clear there was no visible tension over the decision, adding, “I wish everybody was in the movie!” Her comments suggested Janet’s choice was personal rather than controversial.
Director Antoine Fuqua also addressed the matter and emphasized support rather than conflict. “I have so much respect and love for Janet, but you know it’s okay. She’s supportive of Jaafar and that’s what matters.”
Janet, 59, has not publicly commented on declining involvement and did not attend the premiere. Her silence has only added curiosity, especially as interest around the film continues to grow.
The movie stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew and the son of Jermaine Jackson, in the lead role. It follows Michael’s rise from his early Jackson 5 days through his reign as the King of Pop.
Even with strong family support behind the project, Janet’s decision stands out. In a family known for handling business in public view, choosing privacy may be the loudest statement of all. Michael hits theaters April 24.
