A family in suburban Chicago has filed a lawsuit against local police alleging that a SWAT team member shot their 12 year old son in the knee during an early morning raid on their home.
According to NBC News, the raid happened in May at the Markham, Illinois home of a mother named Crystal, while her three young sons were in bed. The suit claims nearly two dozen officers entered the house with rifles, set off flash bang grenades and shouted “police.” Officers were reportedly there to serve a warrant on Crystal’s boyfriend, Mitchell, who was also at the home.
Mitchell was arrested and charged with drug possession and with having a gun while his state firearm owner’s card was expired. The criminal case against him was dismissed weeks later, according to the reports.
The complaint says the boy was shot in the kneecap, that pieces of his knee are still missing even after surgery, and that he went back to the hospital with an infection soon after. The family says he will likely need more surgeries and intensive physical therapy.
The family is suing the two local police departments that made up the SWAT team, along with the officers involved. The suit seeks $50,000 in damages and lists claims including negligence, emotional distress, assault, battery and false arrest. These are allegations in a lawsuit, and Baller Alert has not seen a response from the departments or officers named.
