McDonald’s is turning up the heat again, and longtime fans will recognize exactly what is coming back to the menu. According to McDonald’s official Menu Item Spotter, Spicy McNuggets will return to participating restaurants nationwide on September 1, 2026, for a limited time. McDonald’s summed up the comeback with a simple message: “We’re so back. And just as spicy as ever.”
The Spicy McNuggets put a hotter spin on the chain’s familiar Chicken McNuggets. According to McDonald’s current product listing, the nuggets are covered in a crispy breading seasoned with aged cayenne and chili pepper. Customers can order them in six-, 10-, 20-, and 40-piece sizes. Mighty Hot Sauce is also returning with the nuggets, according to McDonald’s and recent reporting from Quartz. The sauce combines crushed red pepper, spicy chilis, garlic, and a touch of sweetness.
This is not the first time Spicy McNuggets have disappeared and found their way back. According to McDonald’s original 2020 announcement, the spicy version debuted in September 2020 and represented the first new flavor of Chicken McNuggets offered in the United States since the original nuggets arrived nationally in 1983. At the time, McDonald’s menu innovation executive Linda VanGosen said, “As our customers have been asking for Spicy McNuggets for some time now, we couldn’t think of a better time to bring them to our menus.”
The latest Spicy McNuggets revival also fits a much bigger pattern at the Golden Arches. Instead of leaving some of its most talked-about discontinued or regional products in the past, McDonald’s has repeatedly pulled fan favorites back into the spotlight.
The Snack Wrap may be the biggest example. In June 2025, McDonald’s formally announced that the Snack Wrap would return to U.S. restaurants on July 10 after roughly nine years away. The company’s initial statement from then McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger was only two words: “It’s back.” The comeback eventually became more than a temporary nostalgia play. McDonald’s current U.S. website says the Snack Wrap is “here to stay,” with Ranch and Spicy versions built around McCrispy Strips.
The Daily Double also received a major promotion after spending years as more of a regional find. According to McDonald’s Menu Item Spotter, the burger had already built a following in markets including Chicago, Miami, and Seattle before the company announced a nationwide expansion in 2025. Restaurant Dive reported that the national rollout began July 22 of that year. As of August 2026, McDonald’s still lists the Daily Double on its U.S. burger menu, where it features two beef patties, American cheese, lettuce, onions, mayo, and tomato.
Then there is the McRib, a sandwich whose disappearing act has practically become part of its identity. According to McDonald’s 2024 announcement, the McRib returned nationwide beginning December 3, 2024. McDonald’s brought it back again in November 2025, although that run was regional and included markets such as Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, Seattle, and Los Angeles.
Even McDonald’s seasonal favorites continue to benefit from the comeback formula. According to the company’s 2026 menu announcements, both the Shamrock Shake and OREO Shamrock McFlurry returned on February 17, 2026, for their annual limited run. The previous year, McDonald’s also brought Uncle O’Grimacey back into the campaign as part of a promotion benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities.
For customers who have watched favorite McDonald’s items vanish without warning, the recent streak of revivals makes one thing clear: being removed from the menu does not necessarily mean being gone for good. Starting September 1, Spicy McNuggets will get another turn, and McDonald’s recent history suggests the vault of fan favorites is far from empty.
