NBA Finals Fan Banned for Life and Arrested Over A Wembanyama Selfie

An NBA Finals fan banned for life and arrested is how Game 1 of the Spurs and Knicks series turned into a sideshow, after a juvenile rushed the court in San Antonio just to get a selfie with Victor Wembanyama. The league confirmed on Thursday that the person who breached the floor at Frost Bank Center on Wednesday night was taken into custody and will be barred from every NBA arena going forward, and that a second individual is catching the same lifetime ban for a role the league did not bother to explain.

The whole thing unfolded about halfway through the fourth quarter, with the Knicks holding a 92 to 86 lead. The fan came sprinting onto the hardwood with a phone out while the Spurs were on offense, made a beeline for Wembanyama, and tried to grab a quick selfie video before two security guards swept in, dragged him toward the baseline, and got him off the floor. No one was hurt. Play paused for a moment and resumed with a jump ball, though some Spurs fans were convinced the interruption cost San Antonio a possession at a moment when every trip down the floor mattered.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said the person arrested is a juvenile and declined to release a name for that reason, while confirming the young fan is facing charges. Court rushing at an NBA game can trigger exactly this kind of response under the league’s fan conduct rules, which open the door to ejection, criminal trespass or disorderly conduct charges, and bans, and the NBA made clear it intends to use the full menu here. The statement was blunt, saying the individual would be “banned for life from all NBA arenas,” with the second person receiving the same.

Wembanyama, who is not exactly easy to sneak up on at his height, took it in stride afterward and admitted the moment caught him off guard. He said he had never been in a situation like that and “didn’t know how to act,” then joked that it rattled him almost as much as the time a bat once interrupted a game in San Antonio. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson waved it off entirely, saying he did not consider it much of an event since security handled it fast and everyone moved on to the next play.

For all the chaos, the night still belonged to New York. The Knicks closed out a 105 to 95 win to take Game 1 and stretch their playoff run to twelve straight victories, with a courtside crowd that included Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, Ben Stiller, Patrick Ewing, and Shaquille O’Neal soaking it in. Game 2 tips off Friday, June 5, back in San Antonio at 8:30 p.m., and the Spurs will be looking to even the series before it heads north.
