Marshae Jones of Birmingham, Alabama has been indicted for manslaughter after her unborn child was shot and killed during an altercation outside of a local Dollar Store.
Jones was five months pregnant when Ebony Jemison shot her in the stomach in December 2018 over a dispute involving the father of Jones’ baby. Jemison was initially charged with manslaughter, but after the grand jury chose not to indict her, the charges were dismissed.
According to Pleasant Grove Police Lt. Danny Reid, Jemison was defending herself after Jones initiated the fight. “Let’s not lose sight that the unborn baby is the victim here,” he said. “She had no choice in being brought unnecessarily into a fight where she was relying on her mother for protection.”
Reid told AL.com, “When a 5-month pregnant woman initiates a fight and attacks another person, I believe some responsibility lies with her as to any injury to her unborn child. That child is dependent on its mother to try to keep it from harm, and she shouldn’t seek out unnecessary physical altercations.”
Jones has been transferred to Jefferson County Jail where she is being held on a $50,000 bond.
