Azealia Banks is being called out after posting a video on Facebook defending her bleaching her skin. Last month Banks received some backlash after admitting to using the skin bleaching product Whitenicious. But most recently she has used social media to explain to fans how bleaching your skin is the equivalent of wearing weave.
Banks said, “I don’t really think it’s important to discuss the cultural significance of skin bleaching anymore because I think that, just as African-American people, just as black people in this world, you assimilate, and there are things you accept, not just out of necessity but things become norm because they just happen all the time,…I guess people see the skin-bleaching thing as something different, but I see it as another … assimilation thing,” she continued. “It’s a continuation of the falsification of self that comes with being a black person in America.”
It’s no secret that Banks continuously calls out other celebrities for cultural appropriation. However, she feels that the skin bleaching does not oppose her opinions on blackness in America and is simply not that serious.
