The highly anticipated sequel to “Girls Trip” is on the way, and they’ll be taking their escapades to Ghana this time.

Tracy Oliver, who co-wrote the movie with Kenya Barris, confirmed the exciting news in an interview with Variety at the Sundance Film Festival. Oliver also said that producer Will Packer “might kill me” for sharing the possible location for the sequel.

Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Tiffany Haddish will all reprise their roles in the acclaimed film.

Oliver revealed that the sequel would follow the ladies in the West African country as they potentially attend the Afrochella festival, Ghana’s annual cultural and music event that mimics Coachella.

While it appears that there’s no definitive timeline yet, Oliver revealed that she is still crafting the script, but the film is indeed happening. “It’s officially happening. I can say that,” Oliver said.

In a previous interview with ET, Queen Latifah shared that she was hoping the cast go somewhere warm for the sequel. “I mean, I wanna go to, like, Brazil… or I’m hearing South Africa,” she shared. “I mean, I’m down to go where it’s warm and where there’s a beach! But with the girls, it doesn’t matter. I know it’s gonna be fun.”

The R-rated comedy was a massive success, grossing $140.9 million against a budget of almost $20 million when it was released in 2017.

Directed by Malcolm D. Lee, “Girls Trip” follows four girlfriends, collectively known as the Flossy Posse, who reunite for a trip to Essence festival after spending several years apart.

Lee previously told EW in 2018 that a sequel was very much on everyone’s mind, but it has to “be a bit bigger” than its predecessor. “It has to be just as good, just as funny, just as outrageous, and that takes time. . . we don’t want to do it if it’s not going to be great. We want to make sure that it’s a quality piece of work.”
