The Buffalo Bills hired the NFL’s first full-time female coach Wednesday. Kathryn Smith will serve as a special teams quality control coach.
“Kathryn Smith has done an outstanding job in the seven years that she has worked with our staff,” said Bills head coach Rex Ryan. “She certainly deserves this promotion based on her knowledge and strong commitment, just to name a couple of her outstanding qualities, and I just know she’s going to do a great job serving in the role of Quality Control-Special Teams.”
Working with Rex Ryan won’t be anything new for her. Smith served as the administrative assistant to head coach Ryan this season. The two also worked together when Ryan was head coach for the New York Jets.
If you have any doubt about her capabilities, Ryan also stated, “Kathryn has been working in a football administrative role and assisted the assistant coaches for years. She has proven that she’s ready for the next step, so I’m excited and proud for her with this opportunity.”
In her new role Smith will work with special teams coordinator Danny Crossman and special teams assistant Eric Smith.
Congrats to Kathryn Smith on her promotion. Another advancement for women to join the coaching ranks major professional sports in the US.
