MSNBC news anchor Chris Matthews announced Monday night that he’s retiring after 26 years of hosting, Hardball with Chris Matthews.Â
The announcement was made live on the air at the beginning of the show’s opening segment.
Matthew’s retirement comes on the heels of misconduct allegations that followed the host for several years.
Informing his viewers, Matthews said, “After a conversation with MSNBC, I decided tonight will be my last ‘Hardball,’ so let me tell you why. The younger generation’s out there ready to take the reins. We see them in politics, in media, in fighting for their causes. They’re improving the workplace.”
Accusations of misconduct from 2016 resurfaced last Friday when GQ columnist Laura Bassett accused Matthews of making inappropriate comments when she was a guest on Hardball in 2016.
“Compliments on a woman’s appearance that some men, including me, might have once incorrectly thought were okay, were never okay,” Matthews continued, “Not then and certainly not today. And for making such comments in the past, I’m sorry.”â €
Although Matthews didn’t name Bassett during his on-air apology, the context of his apology seemed to be aimed at her.
Bassett tweeted out her feelings on Matthews’ announcement by saying, “All I gotta say is… it’s about time.”
