The search for missing baby Emmanuel Haro, whose case has sparked national outrage, has taken a devastating turn.
According to NBC Los Angeles, just one week after reporting their 7-month-old son kidnapped, Jake and Rebecca Haro have been arrested on suspicion of murder. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the arrests Friday morning, saying both parents were taken into custody at their home in Cabazon, about 90 miles east of Los Angeles.
Authorities are still searching for Emmanuel. “Our investigators have followed up on the reported sightings of 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro, but he has not yet been located,” the department said in a statement.
The case began when Rebecca Haro told deputies she was attacked outside a Big 5 sporting goods store in Yucaipa.
“I took him out of the car seat and laid him on the chair. I had his diapers here, and someone said, ‘Hola.’ I couldn’t turn, and I don’t remember nothing. I got up from the floor and didn’t see my child. Someone took him from me,” she said.
Investigators later revealed inconsistencies in her account. Detectives have since searched the couple’s home, seized Jake Haro’s vehicle, and canvassed neighboring properties.
Court records show Jake Haro has a history of child abuse. He was convicted in 2021 of felony child endangerment after a baby girl suffered broken bones and head injuries in his care. Several outlets have claimed the child was his own daughter, who now lives with permanent developmental challenges.
The couple’s 2-year-old child has also been placed in protective custody.
