The chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party claims hackers stole $2.3 million from the party’s account that was being used to help reelect Donald Trump in the key battleground state.

According to the Associated Press, Republican Party Chairman Andrew Hitt said they noticed the suspicious activity on Oct. 22 and contacted the FBI last Friday.

The attack was discovered with less than two weeks before election day as both candidates work overtime to try and win the state which holds 10 electoral votes. Polls have consistently shown a tight race in the state, and both Trump and Biden have planned visits to Wisconsin to campaign in the final stretch leading up to Election Day.

Hackers were able to manipulate invoices from four vendors who were being paid to send out direct mailings for Trump’s reelection efforts and to provide pro-Trump merchandise to supporters. Invoices and other documents were doctored so that payments to vendors were sent directly to the hackers instead.

Hitt said the stolen money would have been used to make snap spending decisions based on the state of the race.
