A disturbing video released by the Fort Lupton Police Department in Colorado shows the moment a suspect sitting in a police cruiser was hit by a train.Â
Yareni Rios-Gonzalez, 20, was detained on Sept. 16 as a suspect in a road rage incident and placed inside a police vehicle. The cruiser was parked on railroad tracks.
Police left Rios-Gonzalez alone while they searched her truck, which was parked nearby. In the video, a train whistle sounds while she sits in the car. Rios-Gonzalez tried to get out of the vehicle but could not open the doors since they were locked.Â
Rios-Gonzalez was in a Platteville Police Department cruiser at the time of the crash. The department was assisting in the traffic stop.Â
“When she was in the back of the car, she was able to see the train coming,” Rios-Gonzalez’s attorney, Paul Wilkinson, told CNN. “She was frantically trying to escape, trying to open the doors, but she was handcuffed.
Body cam footage released Friday captures the entire ordeal. In the video, an officer yells, “stay back!” Officers are seen fleeing from the area near the police vehicle as the train barrels toward them.Â
The train rams into the cruiser, crumpling the vehicle and tossing it several yards. An officer can be heard radioing for help for the injured woman.Â
Rios-Gonzalez sustained a head injury, broken arm, a fractured sternum, broken teeth, nine broken ribs, and back and leg injuries in the crash. She was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive.Â
Wilkinson said he intends to pursue legal action against the Platteville Police Department and all of the officers individually. The officer who parked the vehicle on the tracks has been placed on paid administrative leave while the Colorado Bureau of Investigation looks into the incident.Â
So far, no charges have been filed against Rios-Gonzalez. Fort Lupton police have referred her case to the Weld County District Attorney.
