Dwyane Wade Statue Gets New Face After Two Years of Viral Backlash

The Dwyane Wade statue outside Miami’s Kaseya Center has officially received a new face, two years after its original unveiling sparked widespread criticism over how little it resembled the basketball legend. The Miami Heat revealed the updated sculpture on Friday, October 30, giving Wade’s famous bronze tribute a noticeable makeover.

When the eight-foot statue debuted in October 2024, fans immediately questioned its appearance. The sculpture was supposed to honor one of the most recognizable players in Miami Heat history, but its facial features quickly became the subject of countless jokes and memes.

Now, the franchise has made an actual head replacement.

The Heat brought back original sculptors Omri Amrany and Oscar León to redesign the statue’s face. The replacement head was created in Chicago, Wade’s hometown, before being transported to Miami and installed over two days earlier this week.

Workers concealed the sculpture during the installation, keeping the updated appearance hidden until Friday’s reveal.

The Dwyane Wade statue controversy had followed the former NBA star since its debut, and Wade admitted he was fully aware of the online criticism.

In an essay published Friday, Wade addressed the public reaction.

“I heard the jokes,” Wade wrote. “I saw the memes. I read the reactions. Everybody had an opinion about whether it actually looked like me.”

Initially, Wade defended the sculpture because he understood the work involved in creating it. He had participated in the original design process and felt protective of the artists’ efforts.

However, his perspective eventually changed.

Wade recognized that the monument belonged to the Miami community just as much as it represented his personal accomplishments. After discussions with the artists and organization, everyone agreed that improving the facial resemblance was the right decision.

The basketball legend also emphasized that the changes were never intended to disrespect the original artwork.

“This isn’t about erasing the work that was already done or disrespecting the artists who put their time and talent into creating it. It’s about being willing to listen,” Wade explained.

Although the Dwyane Wade statue has a different face, the historic basketball moment it celebrates remains unchanged.

The bronze sculpture captures Wade’s unforgettable celebration on March 9, 2009, when he delivered a game-winning three-pointer against the Chicago Bulls.

That night, Wade recorded 48 points and 12 assists, helping Miami secure a dramatic 130-127 victory in double overtime. After hitting the winning shot, he jumped onto the scorer’s table and shouted, “This is my house!”

The moment became one of the defining images of his career.

Current Miami Heat players have also noticed the transformation. Guard Pelle Larsson expressed surprise after discovering the statue’s head had been replaced.

“How did they do that?” Larsson asked. “I mean, that’s crazy. I didn’t know you could do that.”

For Wade, the monument represents much more than an individual performance. During his career with Miami, he helped deliver three NBA championships, earned 13 All-Star selections, and became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer.

His No. 3 jersey has also been retired by the organization.

The updated Dwyane Wade statue now features a more recognizable facial likeness while preserving the celebration that made the original moment legendary.

Wade hopes the changes allow Miami fans to reconnect with the memory rather than focus on the sculpture’s appearance.

He summed up his feelings with a message that connected the tribute to the city where he built his legacy.

“It may be my likeness, but it will always be our house.”
