Basketball Wives

The multi-million dollar Basketball Wives franchise didn’t start as a glamorous career move, but as a survival tactic.

During the March 18 episode of the Not My Best Moment podcast with KevOnStage, Shaunie Henderson shared that the hit series was born out of deep personal “uncertainty and desperation” during the breakdown of her first marriage with Shaquille O’Neal . While the world saw her as a high-profile wife, Henderson revealed she was actually facing a massive life transition without a financial safety net.

“I was divorcing, and nobody knew it,” she explained. “But I was preparing to divorce and I just didn’t have any stability.” Because she genuinely believed her marriage would last “forever,” she hadn’t spent years building a separate nest egg. This lack of a backup plan forced her to create a business that could provide immediate security for her and her family.

“I literally left my marriage with nothing but hopes that things would be OK until a judge said it would be OK,” Henderson said. “Basketball Wives was actually developed during that time of just like, ‘Something’s got to work.’”

The idea for the show first sparked while she was still married, fueled by the rising popularity of other famous families and constant questions from the public about the daily lives of athletes’ partners. “I saw the Kardashians. I’m like, ‘How hard is this?’” Henderson said. “And people would always come and ask like, ‘What do you guys do as wives? Do you guys all hang out together? What do you do every day?’”

While the series enjoyed a historic 12-season run before wrapping up in 2025, Henderson admitted that the final years of that era involved a lot of “masking” her true feelings in public while being “unhappy on the inside.”

Today, her life is in a much more stable and joyful place, having moved on to marry her husband, Keion Henderson, in 2022.
