Would You Pay For It? TikTok Is Testing a Plan That Lets You Buy Your Way Out of Ads

TikTok is stepping up its discovery tools. The platform has officially launched its “Nearby Feed” to help users find places and events happening around them. From restaurants and bars to travel ideas and attractions, this feed is all about putting local content front and center.

Posts in the Nearby Feed are shown to people based on location, the topic of the content, and when the content was posted,” TikTok explained. Creators with public posts may now have their videos appear to users located in the same city or region, especially when tagging a place or service.

The feature is currently live in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany. TikTok first tested a version of this feed back in 2022 with users in Southeast Asia.

Importantly, location sharing is optional and restricted to users aged 18 and up. If enabled, TikTok may use GPS data while the app is in use. iOS users will see a visible indicator whenever their location is accessed.

TikTok says content from users under 18, those with private accounts, or posts set to Friends or Only Me will not appear in the Nearby Feed.

If you’re planning a trip or just curious about another city, you can change your location manually to check out different areas. According to TikTok, 46% of UK users have visited a local spot they saw on the app. It’s a feature designed to increase visibility for small businesses and creators while helping users make the most of their surroundings.

No word yet on a U.S. launch, but TikTok is clearly betting big on real-world engagement.
