According to the White House, the order, signed during a White House ceremony, dramatically expands the administration’s legal authority to combat the production, trafficking, and distribution of the synthetic opioid that continues to drive overdose deaths across the United States. Trump framed the move as a necessary response to what he described as a national emergency fueled by foreign suppliers and transnational criminal organizations.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump compared the deadly impact of fentanyl to traditional weapons, arguing that the drug’s toll rivals that of large-scale attacks.
