NASCAR Legend Greg Biffle Killed After Private Jet Crashes Near North Carolina Runway, Wife and Children Reportedly Among the Dead [Video]

Legendary NASCAR driver Greg Biffle is among the dead after a fiery plane crash in North Carolina.

Authorities say the Cessna C550, a private jet registered to a company owned by the 55-year-old racing star, crash landed near a runway at Statesville Regional Airport Thursday morning, killing Biffle and others onboard. The light jet had taken off from the same airstrip about 26 minutes earlier and was originally bound for Florida.

The aircraft appeared to turn back toward the airport just minutes into the flight before the fatal crash, according to preliminary reports.

Social media quickly became filled with tributes and confirmation of the victims. Garrett Mitchell, known online as YouTuber Cleetus McFarland, said Biffle and his family were headed to spend time with him when the tragedy unfolded.

“Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, and son Ryder were on that plane… because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us. We are devastated. I’m so sorry to share this,” Mitchell wrote.

North Carolina Congressman Richard Hudson, who knew the family, also issued a statement on the loss.

“I am devastated by the loss of Greg, Cristina, and their children, and my heart is with all who loved them,” Rep. Hudson wrote. “They were friends who lived their lives focused on helping others. Greg was a great NASCAR champion who thrilled millions of fans. But he was an extraordinary person as well, and will be remembered for his service to others as much as for his fearlessness on the track. Our prayers are with their family, friends, and everyone grieving this unimaginable loss.”

It remains unclear who was piloting the jet. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation.
