Lionel Richie is back home in Los Angeles after spending three days in intensive care following another alarming health episode during a live performance.
The latest Lionel Richie health update comes after the 77-year-old singer checked himself into a St. Louis hospital following his August 29 concert at The Muny. Richie is reportedly “doing great” after doctors kept him to conduct precautionary cardiac tests.
The hospitalization began only hours after Richie took the stage for The Muny’s annual summer finale in Forest Park. The concert was a one-night event scheduled for August 29, separate from the main summer run of his Sing a Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.
Toward the end of the St. Louis performance, audience members noticed that Richie appeared to be having difficulty continuing at his usual pace. TMZ reported that Richie asked his team to bring him a chair while he performed his final song, “All Night Long.” After leaving the venue, he checked himself into a local hospital so doctors could run tests.
Initial reports pointed to possible mild dehydration. A subsequent TMZ report said doctors were also conducting tests related to cardiac concerns while Richie remained in the ICU. He was ultimately discharged Wednesday, September 2, and traveled back to Los Angeles to continue recovering.
None of the latest reporting has identified a specific diagnosed cardiac condition. Reports have described doctors investigating possible dehydration and conducting cardiac-related testing as a precaution.
His latest health scare has attracted additional attention because it follows a remarkably similar episode less than three months earlier.
On June 24, Richie opened his 2026 Sing a Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota. According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, Richie was about 55 minutes into his performance when he told the crowd he felt dizzy and strange. While performing “Dancing on the Ceiling,” he sat on the stage instead of delivering the song with his usual movement.
Richie addressed what was happening in real time, telling the audience, “When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your ass down.”
He continued with “Three Times a Lady” at the piano before stopping the performance. FOX 9 Minneapolis St. Paul reported that Richie announced an unexpected intermission so he would not fall over. A member of his band later returned to tell the audience that Richie was not feeling well and would not be able to finish the concert.
Richie was taken to a hospital as a precaution after the Minnesota incident. The health scare also affected the opening stretch of his tour. According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, his scheduled performances in Chicago and Columbus were postponed after doctors advised him to rest and return to full health.
He did not remain offstage for long. Richie returned for a June 30 performance in Pittsburgh, and days later offered fans his own update. The singer thanked supporters for checking on him and wrote, “I’m doing well, and I’m grateful for all of you.”
The St. Louis episode now puts that earlier hospitalization back into focus. Dehydration was also associated with his June illness.
Richie has dealt with other serious health challenges during his decades in music, although there is no reported connection between those conditions and his two recent hospital visits.
According to People, he revealed that he underwent four surgeries in the early 1990s while doctors tried to determine what was causing problems with his throat and voice. The condition was eventually linked to acid reflux associated with his diet. The ordeal threatened one of the most important tools of his career and became one of the health struggles he later discussed publicly.
Despite the two 2026 hospitalizations, Richie still has multiple performances listed on his calendar. His official tour schedule currently shows a September 26 date at San Francisco’s Chase Center, followed by rescheduled concerts in Chicago and Columbus and a series of Las Vegas performances later this fall.
The San Francisco show is itself a rescheduled date. Chase Center currently lists Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire for September 26, while no new change connected to Richie’s hospitalization has been announced by the venue.
For now, the most encouraging Lionel Richie health update is that he has left the hospital and returned home after doctors kept him under observation. After two health scares during performances in a matter of months, his recovery and upcoming schedule will likely remain closely watched as the legendary entertainer prepares for his next trip back to the stage.
