Mary J. Blige has sold an undisclosed stake in her publishing and recorded music assets to Primary Wave Music, bringing some of the most recognizable songs in R&B into a new deal. Variety reported the sale on Monday, October 26, as the company announced a partnership with the singer known as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.
According to Primary Wave’s announcement, the agreement covers songs including “Family Affair,” “My Life,” “Mary Jane (All Night Long),” “Be Happy,” “You Bring Me Joy,” “I Can Love You” and “Be Without You.” The company plans to work with Blige and her team on opportunities involving her existing recordings and compositions.
The financial details remain private. Variety reported that Blige sold undisclosed shares of her music assets, but Primary Wave did not reveal a purchase price or specify the percentage involved. Music Business Worldwide also pointed out that the company’s public statement does not explain the ownership structure. There is no confirmation that Blige sold her entire catalog.
Instead, Primary Wave described an arrangement that gives Blige access to its marketing and music publishing resources. Its stated plans include exploring branding, digital campaigns and synchronization licensing, which can place music in movies, television programs, advertising and other productions. Those opportunities could introduce older songs to new audiences while keeping them commercially active.
Natalia Nastaskin, Primary Wave’s chief content officer, celebrated the partnership with a statement that reflected her history as a listener.
“From the moment I heard ‘You Remind Me’ on NY’s KISS-FM, I became a Day 1 Mary J. Blige fan. For over 30 years, she has gifted the world with hit after undeniable hit and in the process has created the soundtrack of our lives. To partner with the Queen herself on her extraordinary catalog and her everlasting legacy is an honor for me and for our entire Primary Wave team.”
For Blige, the music catalog sale involves songs that helped reshape the relationship between hip hop and R&B. Her 1992 debut, “What’s the 411?,” introduced a sound that blended soulful vocals with the rhythms and attitude of hip hop. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame credits that approach with helping establish a new direction for R&B.
Her 1994 sophomore album, “My Life,” expanded that legacy with intensely personal songwriting. In 2025, the Library of Congress selected the album for the National Recording Registry, recognizing its cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance.
The catalog also includes “Family Affair,” the 2001 hit that became Blige’s first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100. According to Primary Wave, the song spent six weeks at the top of the chart. More than two decades later, she performed it during the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show, introducing that signature record to another massive audience.
Then there is “Be Without You,” a standout from her 2005 album “The Breakthrough.” Primary Wave noted that the single reached No. 3 on the Hot 100 and earned Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. “I Can Love You,” featuring Lil’ Kim, and the songs from My Life also represent different chapters of her career covered by the agreement.
Primary Wave reports that Blige has sold more than 50 million records worldwide across 15 studio albums, two live albums and 83 singles. The company credits her with nine Grammy wins and 37 nominations. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted her in 2024, with Dr. Dre and Method Man taking part in the ceremony.
Her influence also reaches beyond music. Music Business Worldwide noted that Blige received two Academy Award nominations for the 2017 film “Mudbound,” one for her supporting performance and another for the original song “Mighty River.” Primary Wave also highlighted her Hollywood Walk of Fame star, awarded in 2018.
Primary Wave already works with music associated with legends including Whitney Houston, Prince, Bob Marley and James Brown, according to Music Business Worldwide. Its newest arrangement brings Blige’s catalog into that broader business, but the public announcement leaves the exact financial terms and division of rights undisclosed.
The music catalog sale comes while Blige remains active onstage. Her first Las Vegas residency, “Mary J. Blige: My Life, My Story,” began in May 2026 at Dolby Live at Park MGM. The venue lists additional shows for October 28, 30, and 31, followed by five performances in February 2027, with the final scheduled for February 20.
