President hopeful Joe Biden has been a strong critic of Donald Trump’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a published New York Times opinion article, written by Biden, the likely Democratic nominee argued that Trump and his lack of ability to lead has” led to catastrophic results.”
“Trump not bid administration has supplied an answer to how the United States can move towards opening the economy in a safe and effective manner,” Biden said in the article. Biden also wrote that the response to public health and economic crisis shouldn’t be separated, but looked at as a whole.
“Make no mistake, an effective plan to beat the virus is the ultimate answer to how we get our economy back on track,” Biden explained. “So we should stop thinking of the health and economic responses as separate. They are not.”
The Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice-President to President Barack Obama called for broader actions, writing that the aggressive social-distancing precautions need to continue until the number of new cases declines considerably. Testing needs to be widespread as well as contact tracing, and effective” disease surveillance” would be required to prepare the health care community for future flare-ups properly.
” Once we’ve implemented these steps, we can begin to reopen more businesses and put more Americans back to work. Things will not go back to ‘normal’ right away,” Biden wrote. “As public health experts have said, we should expect activity to return gradually, with sites like offices and stores reopening before arenas and theaters,” Biden added.
As of Easter Sunday, there were over 530,000 confirmed cases in the United States, with 20,600 deaths and over 32,000 reported recoveries.
Trump, along with his White House administration, has come under intense scrutiny and criticism from national health officials for their delayed reaction to slowing the spread of the virus.
Since the start of the outbreak, Trump’s main concern has been the economy over providing an adequate response to slowing the spread, leaving the U.S. struggling to overcome the virus.
” As we prepare to reopen the United States, we have to remember what this crisis has taught us: The administration’s failure to plan, to prepare, to honestly assess and communicate the threat to the nation led to catastrophic results,” Biden said in his article,” We cannot repeat those mistakes.”
