North Carolina authorities have arrested a couple, charging them with the murder of a missing pregnant mother of two, whose remains were found stuffed in a suitcase last Monday.
According to People, the couple, identified as 37-year-old Thomas Clayton Johnson, and 24-year-old Emmalei Grace Trevathan, were arrested on Wednesday during a traffic stop.
According to the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, the pair are accused of killing 28-year-old Brittany Samone Smith, a pregnant mom of two, who was last seen alive on February 4. The couple is each being held on charges of murder, the murder of an unborn child, and concealment of a body.
“On Monday, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office opened a homicide investigation, from a missing person’s case, following the discovery of a body stuffed in a bag, near the shoreline of the Neuse River, in Raleigh,” the official police statement said.
Smith was allegedly strangled to death, and police have not yet uncovered a motive for her murder.
